Mi chiamo Riccardo Ponis e sono un allegro buffone depresso; un cialtrone della creatività; una persona che pur non sapendo suonare bene uno strumento, si è permessa di fare tre album con il suo progetto Metibla e creare altri progetti musicali. In passato ho girato un po’ di videoclip e cortometraggi che non mi hanno mai portato a nulla di lontanamente simile ad una carriera artistica. Sto sempre a scrivere. Ho quarant’anni, faccio l’impiegato ed ho una meravigliosa famiglia che coraggiosamente mi sopporta. Sono laureato e specializzato in Scienze Umanistiche indirizzo cinema con una tesi sul grande Hal Ashby. Ho scritto un libro e numerosi saggi di cinema. Ha organizzato decine di rassegne presso il cineclub Detour, un’associazione culturale di Roma dove spesso dormivo, studiavo e utilizzavo come oggetto di vanto per conquistare le ragazze che periodicamente mi respingevano. Non riesco a stare senza creare.
Con questo crowdfunding vorrei raccogliere fondi per realizzare un lungometraggio in uno stile di regia "vecchio stampo". Cosa vuol dire? Che gli attori avranno una recitazione di ampio respiro dati gli stacchi di montaggio meno frequenti rispetto la norma; la fotografia verrà studiata per evocare una precisa atmosfera in sintonia con la storia, che avrà, come tutto il resto, la sua naturale durata. In altre parole, la cosidetta "messa in scena" verrà curata per fare un'opera e non un semplice prodotto commerciale.
La cifra qui richiesta non è ovviamente sufficiente per coprire tutte le spese, ma limitandole e utilizzando vecchie ma valide strumentazioni (e naturalmente contando su affidabili e competenti amici) vorrei tentare di concretizzare questo obiettivo.
La mia opinione è che, grazie alle odierne tecnologie, sia possibile fare un cinema bello come quello di ieri. Un cinema che abbia durata, contenuti ed estetica “naturali”, ossia non basati su altri fattori estranei al processo creativo; un cinema che lasci intendere e non spieghi sempre tutto; un cinema con le profondità di campo, dove se non sei stato attento a qualche particolare, potresti avere una percezione alterata dell'opera. Sono solo alcune delle caratetristiche che vorrei nel mio film. Non so neanche se riuscirò ad applicarle, ma so per certo che voglio provarci. E per riuscirci ho bisogno del supporto da parte delle persone che come me credono che il vecchio cinema sia piu' interessante di quello contemporaneo. Anche perché, senza un pubblico, non si può fare uno spettacolo.

My name is Riccardo Ponis and I am a cheerful depressed fool; a creative charlatan; a person who doesn’t know how to play any instruments very well but managed to record three albums with his band ‘Metibla’ and other musical ventures. In the past I shot a bunch of video clips and short films that never brought me anything remotely like an artistic career. I'm always writing. I'm forty, I'm an office worker and I have a wonderful family who bravely endures me. I am a graduate and specialized in Cinema Humanities with a thesis on the great Hal Ashby. I wrote a book and several essays about cinema. I organized dozens of shows at the film club ‘Detour’, a cultural association in Rome where I often slept and studied and which I used as a source of pride to conquer the girls who periodically rejected me. I cannot live without creating.
With this crowdfunding campaign, I would like to raise enough money to make a feature film in the "old-fashioned" directing style. What does that mean? I hear you ask! It means that the actors will have an all embracing performance, given that the deadlines to pull the film together will be tighter than the norm; photography will be studied meticulously to evoke an atmosphere that stays true to the story, which will have, like everything else, its natural duration. In other words, the so-called "staging" will be taken great care of so that the film is a piece of art and not just a commercial product.
The amount I’m trying to raise through the campaign is obviously not going to be enough to cover all the expenses, but I’ll be limiting them and using old but effective equipment (and of course relying on reliable and super competent friends to help me with the process). I do think that, thanks to technology, it is possible to make today’s cinema as beautiful as yesterday's. A cinema that has a "natural" duration, content and aesthetic, that is not based on other factors that get in the way of the creative process; a cinema that lets you understand and does not always explain everything; a cinema with depth, one that if you watch but don’t pay particular attention, your perceptions can change. These are just some of the features that I would like to bring out in the film. I don’t even know if I'll be able to apply them, but I am certain that I want to try to. To do that though I really need support from people like me who believe that the cinema of yesterday is more interesting than the one we have today. And also because, after all, without an audience, you can’t put on a show.
