The open call selection process is a unique opportunity for any emerging artist to have a chance to show their work at the festival. The call for 2015 projects is currently open (details here). Artists and teams will be selected in January.
-
Our event is free to attend. Keeping it accessible is important to us.
-
Supporting artists in the creation and presentation of art in the public sphere is not free. In fact, it requires additional resources because the infrastructure for necessities like lighting and electricity simply isn't there.
The inaugural Northern Spark event was a pie-in-the-sky idea made possible largely through a major government grant that is no longer available to us. We now rely on several income sources, including the government, foundations, businesses, and a lot of individuals, like you!

THE IMPACT
The Northern Spark festival offers hundreds of local and national artists a huge, public platform.
Artists benefit from a truly unique opportunity to stretch the boundaries of what's possible, launch or build their careers, and often create larger than life work on a massive stage. In turn, our audiences get to witness and participate in once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Moreover, we partner with cultural institutions to keep their doors open and admission-free for special late-night programming. This allows people to take risks on new artforms and experiences.
Community events of this scale and magnitude don't happen often or easily.
Your support makes all the difference. Help us continue to energize our creative community and vibrant city!

RISKS AND CHALLENGES
The biggest challenge of an outdoor festival is inclement weather. After four festivals, we've learned a few lessons about organizing an all-night, outdoor festival. On the bright side, the Farmer's Almanac forecast for Minneapolis in mid-June 2015 is “hotter and drier than normal.” Still, we'll be making some format changes this year to better support individual artists, their projects, and the festival experience in the event of rain.

MORE ABOUT THE OPEN CALL The call for 2015 projects is open until Monday, January 12, 2015 at 9pm CST. For the 2015 festival, artists are being asked to propose ideas that explore the fundamentals of what makes Northern Spark unique—nighttime, light, duration, participation, innovative art, unique memories, and community. We are interested to see how artists propose to build on that tradition. Find out more details here.
