A few words from our writer/director
Dear reader,
My name is Paddy Slattery from Offaly in Ireland and I’d like to borrow a few minutes of your time. Actually, borrow is the wrong word. It’s not like I can return those minutes if you want them back. What I should say is – please read this letter. I am reaching out to you because I’m about to embark on one of the most ambitious projects I’ve ever been involved in. I, along with a team of brilliant filmmakers, will set about making my debut feature film titled ‘The Broken Law of Attraction’.
So, needless to say, I’m excited and petrified in equal measure.
One of the reasons I’m excited is because I will be joined on this production by one of Ireland’s most prolific and experienced Producers, Edwina Forkin of Zanzibar Films, along with her colleague and Producer Deirdre McNally. We will also have an amazing cast and crew made up of some of the hottest talent working in the Irish film industry today. We will be announcing those names over the course of our campaign.
Yes, that’s just one of the reasons I’m excited. And the reason I’m petrified? Well…. Where do I begin!?
Ah no…. I’m not entirely consumed by fear but I do know we have a monumental task ahead of us. In fact, every feature film that was ever made has had some form of hurdle to overcome. But on top of that, as the director of this film, I will face a long and physically demanding journey. Directing a film can be difficult at the best of times for people in the prime of their physical health, but as a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down, with little to no movement in my fingers and a constant dependency on a wheelchair, suddenly the challenge ahead becomes more difficult.
But it can be done and it will be done, by hook or by crook, because I believe in myself and I believe in the brilliant team around me.
I want YOU to be a part of this team!
I want you to join us on this creative journey from script to screen and believe me, our end goal is to have this film screen in cinemas all across Ireland and around the world followed soon after by a DVD, TV and online release. However, before we get to that point, we have more than a few hurdles to overcome first and this is one of the reasons I’m reaching out to you now.
You see, one of the biggest obstacles we will face is of a financial nature. In fact, whilst I’m appealing to you, we are also appealing to the Irish Film Board and the BAI (Broadcasting Authority of Ireland) for state supported funding. But even with their support, which can only be a certain percentage of the entire budget, we will have additional costs and this is why we must raise the rest of our budget independently.
€100,000 is a hell of a lot of money. Even as I write the number I’m reminded of the countless ways in which that money could be better spent in our society, yet, here I am, appealing for your support to make a film. How can I justify the absurdity of such a request when so many millions are homeless and starving? Well, I look at it like this…
Storytelling, in its many incarnations (books, TV, cinema, painting, music etc.), is something we, as a specie, have done since the creation of language as a form of communication. It’s what made and shaped us, even at the primitive stages of our evolution. It has helped us view life in a particular way and was used as a device to influence the way in which we live today. Storytelling is the most important form of expression.
With that in mind, we understand the potential impact a story, or film in this case, can have on audiences and society in general. This is not about getting rich and famous and walking down red carpets in expensive clothes. As a filmmaker, I believe we have an opportunity to entertain, inspire, motivate and even educate people. I have a voice and I want it to be heard and filmmaking is the only way I know how.
Despite the fact that many people believe I am incapable of achieving this goal because of a so-called disability, and despite the fact that I am petrified I might fail, I am motivated now more than ever. That’s what living is about and that’s how I can justify the lengths we go to in order to achieve our goals.
Join us on this journey. Become an integral cog in the wheel that will drive this engine forward.
We need your help and cannot do it alone.
Sincerely,
Paddy Slattery
