Bio: Growing up, my family moved around the country. This nomadic beginning serves me well as a filmmaker. I observe my surroundings and their impact on people and translate that into cinema.
After high school, I worked at the Chicago Board of Trade. Though I was on a financial fast track, I left to follow my artistic yearnings. I moved to Atlanta to work on music productions, videos, and independent films. Back in Milwaukee, I was a photojournalist and writer and taught photography, art, and video production to young people in public schools and non-profits.
In 2000 I joined filmmaker Janet Fitch on a small project that grew into a 3-part documentary on gun violence. Guns, Grief and Grace in America is an in-depth look at this complex issue from a local, state, and national perspective.
Part 1 of the series, Dear Rita (2001), shows the toll that gun violence took on 1 family and their community. The story aired on WI Public TV, screened at the Moondance International Film Festival, and was a Finalist in the NY Festivals' International Film & Video Awards.
Part 2, The Promise of America (2002), explores activism through the experiences of women and families at the Million Mom March. It aired on Milwaukee Public TV and won a Telly.
Part 3, Everyone's in Its Sights (2005), was developed with educators, social workers, and community activists. It is used as a tool by schools, universities, community organizations, and prisons.
In 2002 I won my first Emmy by co-directing In the Net with Jim Friedman. This made-for-TV film received 2 Emmys. Our film Skin Complex (2003) earned 5 Emmys, 1 for Outstanding Achievement-Direction, and a Telly.
In 2005 I filmed a community agency as it transformed its traditional top-down structure into a team-based one. Starting With Me (2006) shows community building by working through issues of race, class, communication, and respect. It won two Telly Awards.
In Spring 2007, I shot Mark My Words, a feature documenting 24 hours in the lives of some of the nation's most talented poets. It explores the power of the spoken word, its ability to transform people and community. The film is a visual gumbo of performances, home lives, day jobs, families, and daily routines, seasoned by the poets' unique perspectives on the power of words.
I am a passionate advocate for the great talent in the Midwest. I helped found and sit on the board of Film WI, a public/private coalition promoting multi-media production in WI.
