About ButtonDuino

  • ButtonDuino is TINY!  At less than 18.64 mm x 18.25 mm (0.73in x 0.718in), Buttonduino is smaller than a quarter but still packs the power of the Arduino platform. It is small enough to be placed in any project.

  • ButtonDuino is USB Powered and Programmable!  No need for those FTDI boards or IC's, USB programming is now integrated into the bootloader, this makes Buttonduino cost effective and programmable anywhere!

  • ButtonDuino is Breadboard Mountable! No more messy wires to your breadboard like other tiny arduinos, Buttonduino is breadboard compatible, so it plugs, with no pin conflict, directly into any standard pitch (2.54mm) breadboard as well as vero-board. This makes it cleaner and perfect for prototyping.

  • ButtonDuino is Stackable! Buttonduino can be stacked with any Buttonduino compatible ButtonShields (Coming Soon). Need more pins? No problem, Buttonduino can be expanded, via I2C or SPI. Need an SD card module or even wifi, then just stack it and program! Viola, no need to for hours of hardware debugging, Buttonduino gets you up and running in seconds.

  • ButtonDuino is Cheap! Most enthusiasts would love to leave their beloved Arduino boards in their projects if it wasn't for the price tag and size of the boards. ButtonDuino is cheap enough to pop into any project or swapped from one project to another. No need for PCB redesign. Dirt cheap but still excellent quality.

  • ButtonDuino Can Interface directly to NI LabVIEW! Create amazing Graphical User Interfaces using LabVIEW by National Instruments. All you need is the same micro-USB cable that you already have to program and power ButtonDuino.

  • ButtonDuino is Open-Source and Arduino Compatible! Best feature is that that ButtonDuino's schematics, code and bootloaders are all FREE and Open-Source. All the details will be released once the product is finalized.

Our Goal

Lumina Inova set out on a journey around  South Africa, visiting just over 46 schools and colleges.

We wanted the answer to the fundamental question, "How many students know how to program a microcontroller or have a basic understanding of electronics?". Well, after visiting all those institutions, we found out that a shocking 5 of the 46 schools that we visited, had an understanding of electronics... but these were only technical schools! We then investigated the reasons why these learners are not learning about electronics or even robotics, despite living in an age where technology is changing at a rapid rate. The core reason was that the teachers themselves do NOT understand how they work, and neither do they posses a degree in engineering or computer science. The last reason was that electronic development kits are so damn expensive that it would be impractical to give each student one to play and learn with. This made us ask ourselves how to make a development kit that is not only affordable but also teacher and student user-friendly

The  solution came to us when we thought of creating a tiny development kit that packs the easy to program Power of Arduino. After many months of development, the ButtonDuino was born. Now with your support we aim to introduce this Open-Source Platform to those same schools and show them how important electronics are in this day and age. Not only will it help develop society, but it will also improve the advancement of product development, which would make our tomorrow a better one.

The biggest successes begin with something small. And so this journey to changing the world starts with our tiny ButtonDuino, along with your support.

Development of ButtonDuino

Take us take you on the progress of ButtonDuino:

  1. The schematic and PCB design was planned carefully to ensure that ButtonDuino is safe and practical

  2. The next step was to get the Printed Circuit Boards manufactured. This process involved getting the best quote and reviewing the quality of their boards.

  3. The boards were then populated and went through initial testing. The first test obviously being a simple LED blink and LED fade.

  4. SUCCESS!!

Okay! So Whats Left to Do... And how you can Help?

As enthusiastic as we are about ButtonDuino, there are still a few things to be done before it can launch ButtonDuino to the world.

  1. We need to organized the packaging and source all the components for mass production
  2. We need to create ButtonShields (Discussed in the next section)
  3. Create an online store where ButtonDuinos can be sold and distributed easily and quickly.
  4. Organize the Pick-and-Place assembly for ButtonDuino.

AND THAT'S WHERE YOU COME IN!

The designs are now well proven out and ready for production. Our production army has been selected for PCB manufacturing .

With your support, we'll be able to ramp up to production of these boards and to get them out to all those innovators worldwide. Your contribution will help to fund:

  • Sourcing better Tools for prototyping, production and quality testing
  • Prototyping and producing the hordes of ButtonShields and peripherals that will soon be available.
  • Bulk procurement of components making ButtonDuino even cheaper
  • Production of the boards
  • Help Bring Arduino and Electronics development to Colleges and Schools, especially in Rural Areas.

Interface with LabVIEW

Linking your Arduino with one of the most powerful programming languages in industry, will change the way you implement your projects.

ButtonDuino supports interfacing to LabVIEW 2010+ using your USB-HID interface. Create amazing and beautiful GUI applications that link to your PC. The image below is an ready to load Temperature-Sensing example that comes with ButtonDuino. No Additional debugging hardware required.
