Synopsis: On a sweltering August night in 1930, 15,000 men, women and children swarm into the central Indiana town of Marion to witness the hanging of three black teenagers accused of killing a white man and raping a white woman. Two die, but one, Jimmie Cameron, miraculously survives. A photographer sells thousands of picture postcards memorializing the lynching, a world-renown photo later published in Life Magazine.

The lynching haunts both the survivor and the town for decades. Most townspeople – white and black – try to bury the “incident.” Cameron, on the other hand, refuses to be a victim. He spends the rest of his life on a dogged one-man campaign to confront this history – with great courage and personal charm. To do this he must face down the anger and hatred within himself and in society.

The tale moves between his extraordinary adult life and the events of the youth that shaped it: a joyride gone wrong, the lynching, and the sustaining love of his cellmate, his mother, and a white sheriff. This timely American story, populated by heroes and scoundrels on both sides of the color line, reminds us that we can choose to call upon either the mob mentality or the courageous Cameron that lives inside us all.

FUNDING
Goal
  $5,000
How will these funds be used?
The script is finished and has already won several awards. The next step is finding producing partners who can put up part of our budget.

The screenplay is currently being considered by 3 actor-producers and 2 indie producers.

To be ready to partner with them, we need to:

1) have our attorney prepare a variety of legal documents (including equity investor–SEC offerings);

2) travel to meet with potential partners and A-list cast; and,

3) produce written materials, maintain a phone line, and meet other day-to-day expenses.

Any amount you can contribute will be well-used and much appreciated. Thank you!

HISTORY
May 01, 2008 Fundraising Canceled
($45 of $25,000)
Funds use: The script is completed and is being read by 5 potential producing partners: well-known indie producers and some A-list actors who also produce. Now we need funds to hire NYC casting directors to put us in contact with more of the A-list actors we seek, who will bring in money and foreign distribution possibilities, as well as others for our ensemble cast. These funds will also pay our entertainment lawyer for all kinds of chain of title documents and equity investor (SEC) offerings. A portion will also renew our option of James Cameron's life rights. The script is ready and well-reviewed, so the next step is finding partners who can put up parts of our $10-12 million budget.

Thanks for anything you can help us with.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What makes Fruit of the Tree different?
This is a timely moment to explore a taboo subject in American history. We have, for the first time, a viable biracial presidential candidate who dares to speak about racial healing and unity. The noose events in Jena and some 200 other places, the mistreatment of Hurricane Katrina's victims and survivors, and the many ongoing racial controversies (like immigration and affirmative action) have revealed the need for our country to find a way to become, in Dr. James Cameron's words, "one single and sacred nationality."

Through three staged readings for different audiences, we have found that there is a genuine hunger for racial reconciliation. This intriguing, entertaining and inspiring screenplay has proven itself capable of holding audiences on the edge their seats and stimulating blacks and whites to discuss the complex issues that haunt our past and threaten our future.

Award-winning script (Tribeca Film Festival 2007 All Access Program)

Thank you for brining this important subject to light. I love America and I think it does a great service to the country and anyone who wants to learn about America to expose all of our History and look at where this country is and has been. Thank you again for this great piece of art, really very well done. Cheers.
Thank you for making the point that this story is important for ALL Americans to come to terms with, i.e., it's not a "black" film but an American one. We greatly appreciate your insights and support.
