Folk music isn't dead! In fact, genuinely talented people can make it sound so contemporary, that it will keep you pushing that replay button over & over again.
100 Risings is a documentary film about these people!
It is a music anthropology journey. It aims to explore our genuine folk through the eyes of a musician from a completely different cultural background, Stefan Haslebacher (Sha) - Switzerland, who will try to discover the authenticity of this cultural space by experiencing the daily routine inMoldova and Romania, interacting and jamming with our greatest musicians and by travelling through our beautiful landscape - including a legendary place at the border between Romania and Moldova named '100 Risings', a destination left unknown even for many local people.
The Team
There's only 5 of us on the film set! Well, except our protagonists, of course. And except people who won't actually be on the film set, but helped us through endless chats, coffee breaks, design suggestions and constructive dialogues.
We also managed to become 500 on our facebook page in less than a month!
Lidia Scarlat (the producer of the film, graduated with a 1st Class Media Arts Degree at the University of London) and Max T. Ciorba (the director of the film, final year student at Moldova's Arts Academy) are the two main people talking to you in the pitch.
Sergiu Sili (our soundie) and Andrei Moraru (our camera operator) are hovering in the background during the pitch, they're both currently studying at the Academy of Arts, Republic of Moldova.
The 5th member of our crew is the DoP Nicu Bors , who graduated as a top Masters student in Cinematography, Academy of Arts, Republic of Moldova.
The Impact
100 Risings focuses on the cultural space shared by Moldova and Romania, two countries that recently witnessed a flux of contemporary music inspired by folk music.
At the same time, our music industry is still dominated by low quality imitations of ethno music which overshadows genuine modern folk fusions. We aim to bring our music back to the artistic value it deserves and share it to the transnational world that all of us live in.
Last, but not least, Moldovan cinema is still in its embryonic phase and we're proud to try our best and revive the artistic potential hidden behind the unstable economical background of our people.
Sha & his journey to our lands
Stefan Haslebacher is a musician from Switzerland, one of the best jazz musicians in Europe, he performed on the world's biggest jazz stages. You might be familiar to the 2 main projects he's in: Nik Bärtsch's Ronin
Sha experimented with elements such as minimalism, European jazz, Indian rhythm and Japanese music. 100 Risings will document Sha's his Eastern European journey and his interactions with the best musicians from Moldova and Romania.
Musicians from Moldova
Our summer has been both productive and inspirational. We decided to choose the perfect crew for our project and shot some video tests featuring some of the musicians you will see in the film. Grab your headphones, shut your phone down and relax listening and watching our clips.
Anatol Ștefăneț - Master of the viola music instrument, leader of Trigon ethno jazz band and creator of the Ethno Jazz Music Festival, one of the most important music festivals in Moldova.
Alex Calancea - Master of the bass guitar, he managed to collaborate with most of the artists from Moldova, currently performing through hundreds of concerts in Russia, Asia and Baltic countries.
Alexandru Arcuș - Masters the saxophone despite being only 27 years old. Performed together with Trigon on the world's biggest jazz stages. Also performed at the BBC Saxophone Massive, London, UK.
Musicians from Romania
Alexe Marius Andrei aka Bean- Hip Hop vocalist of the hugely successful Romanian group Subcarpati, believes in the existence of urban and underground folklore.
Argatu - DJ, he's a 19 year old medicine student, yet has a wide experience mixing traditional folk music with drum'n'bass, house, electro and therefore, along with Subcarpati, brings folk music closer to the young generation.
We are currently discussing with a few more ROCK and CLASSICAL musicians from Moldova and Romania, so keep an eye on our facebook page and indiegogo updates for new artists featured in the film!
