In May of last year we decided to start a youth football program in Summertown. Once we had signed up enough players to field a team in each age group, we had to find a place to play. Summertown has never had a football program and did not have a football field. We thought about traveling for every game or even asking a nearby high school if we could use their field for our home games. While we were locating coaches, gathering equipment and buying jerseys we realized that for the youth league to have the greatest chance at success we needed to have our own field. In late July we were given the perfect piece of property and were given the o.k. to construct our field. We began by cutting the hay and we called a surveyor. Everyone involved got on the phone and began calling around to ask for help and donations. We acquired 75 feet of bleachers. Metal was donated for goal posts. The local power system hooked us up. We built a press box, set a scoreboard, and painted the field. On October first we played football in Summertown, on an actual football field, for the first time ever. When the season ended, we looked back and were amazed at everything we had accomplished. We still have a long way to go. We need a fence around the field so that wayward cars can't spin their tires and tear up what grass we do have. We need more bleachers and stadium lights so we can practice after dark in the fall. We would also like to level the field and sew grass so the kids won't have to play in the coarse hay stubble.
IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT MONEY... It really isn't. Yes, we do need it (for obvious reasons), but whether you can support us financially or not you can help us by spreading the word via facebook, twitter and blogs.
Thank you so much for reading this and for any donation that you may make.
