According to TIME MAGAZINE, 2011’s "Person of the Year" wasn’t a single individual, but a generational fenomenon: the protesters around the world, from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street. TIME’s article featured pictures from anonymous militants, including several egyptians protesters, symbols of the movement that brought down the Mubarak government. However, they are not anonymous: we’re talking about countless personal stories that came together during the 2011 riots and now, for the first time, are living in a democratic government. "The Revolution of the Year" is a documentary feature film about the young egyptians that dropped everything and risked their lives for a common cause, a look at these protesters before, during and after the revolution.

The docummentary will take a closer look at these three moments of the revolutionary process. It will show how life in Egypt was before the democratic government - and how the Arab Spring happened - with footage made by the characters themselves. During the presidential elections in June 2012, our film crew was in Cairo, documenting the event on Tahrir Square. Side by side with the very same protesters featured on Time, we experienced the tension, euphoria, and ultimately, the disappointment they faced with this new democracy.

But what comes after? In December, 2012, we aim to  document where this process took these young protesters, by going with them on a reflexive journey, ranging from Cairo, through the Sinai Peninsula, and  the Red Sea. Far from the crowds and turmoil of this “New Egypt”, in the middle of a demilitarized zone, inhabited by beduins, we’ll invite them to sum up their experience, not just as revolutionaries, but as members of a generation. This will happen exactly during the end of 2012, when a new “person of the year” will take their place.

This is a story that needs to be told from the perspective of the people that fought in it, and not just through numbers and political analyses. To understand what made the Arab Spring so significant is to understand what is happening around the world, and the enormous relevance of this historical movement. We are not looking for the “media angle”: “The Revolution of the Year” is a portrait of the youth behind this movement, told in their own voices and memories.

We aim to shoot in December 2012 and January 2013, on Cairo and the Sinai Peninsula. The film is scheduled to be completed at the 2nd quarter of 2013.

We will work with a very small crew, and everyone refused payment to work on this project. We only wish to gather the resources to film in December and guarantee the minimum structure for post-production, so the documentary can be finished in minimum time, since the subject matter is an urgent one. The funding will only cover logistics - travel, hiring of a local producer, lodging, film equipment rental - and post production services. From the beginning, the filmmakers themselves have been funding this project, but the cost of filming abroad is high, and all help is welcome, and no doubt necessary for this movie to come true. Your support will help spread and keep alive a revolution that has only just begun.

We are young brazilian filmmakers. The film will be directed by Diogo Faggiano, who directed the fiction short "Zeit to the Geist" and the documentary "La Última Frontera", filmed in the forests of Sumatra; produced by Angelo Ravazi (partner of Massa Real Films www.massareal.com.br); and edited by Eduardo Chatagnier (awarded editor and partner in the project).

Somos jovens realizadores brasileiros.
