3,000-year-old petroglyphs in the Bishop Volcanic Tablelands were cut out of lava formations with power saws and stolen.

This is disgusting and the people who did this should be caught. The Bureau of Land Management and the Paiute tribal leaders are investigating. Currently the reward is at $2000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves.

The Bishop Paiutes have put in $1000 and the BLM has put in another $1000. We would like to increase this reward through our donations.

Rock Climbers: let's show we care and increase this reward. Help Save and Protect the petroglyphs in the Bishop Volacanic Tablelands.

According to the LA Times:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-petrogl...

"at least four petroglyphs have been taken from the site. A fifth was defaced with deep saw cuts on three sides. A sixth had been removed and broken during the theft, then propped against a boulder near a visitor parking lot.

Dozens of other petroglyphs were scarred by hammer strikes and saw cuts.

"The individuals who did this were not surgeons, they were smashing and grabbing," U.S. Bureau of Land Management archaeologist Greg Haverstock said last week as he examined the damage. "This was the worst act of vandalism ever seen" on the 750,000 acres of public land managed by the BLM field office in Bishop.

The theft required extraordinary effort: Ladders, electric generators and power saws had to be driven into the remote and arid high desert site near Bishop. Thieves gouged holes in the rock and sheared off slabs that were up to 15 feet above ground and 2 feet high and wide."

What happens if the fund is not called upon?

You have the choice to specifiy where you would like YOUR money to go if this fund is not called upon (i.e. the thieves are convicted without the use of this reward or there are no arrests made)

1.  Interpretive programs showing how the damage has affected the site (through the BLM)

2.  An “adopt a camera” program for surveillance of the site, (through the BLM)

3.  Stewardship training and volunteer opportunities at the site. (through the BLM)

4.  The Access Fund in Conjuction with the Paiute Tribe's Historic Preservation division:http://www.bishoppaiutetribe.com/historicpreservation.html

(when you make the donation, you should be able to write in your choice (a number from above) in the area where it asks for a specific name.  If you'd prefer, you could also leave it in the comment section.. (you can do this as a private comment) If you do not specify, it will go to number 4.

Thank You for caring!
