Mission Statement

Tough Enough’s mission is to redefine conventional narratives, spotlight untold stories, and inspire allyship and strength against enduring societal expectations.

The Impact

Our project, Tough Enough, (which received a “Recommend” by The Script Lab on Coverfly) stands as an innovative exploration of resilience and breaking gender barriers in the world of high school football, set against the backdrop of 1940s Texas.

This project not only delves into historical contexts but also resonates with contemporary issues, highlighting the enduring struggles against gender norms.

We aim to tell stories of women and Native Americans that transcend traditional narratives of trauma, focusing instead on themes of allyship and strength, offering a poignant reminder that the battles for equality and understanding persist through the years.

Through a groundbreaking narrative lens that navigates the complexities of gender norms in 1940s Texas, the project illuminates untold stories, seeking to redefine conventional narratives and spotlighting the enduring spirit that challenges societal expectations. This impactful film will be presented as a short, engaging the audience in a meaningful and thought-provoking way.

Why Support Us

Our last film, Rich Kids, was also shot in Houston, TX and was wholly financed through crowdfunding and support of everyday people interested in elevating untold stories.  Because of their generous contributions, Rich Kids went on to win 16 film festival awards before it was picked up by Netflix where it aired in 2020.

What We Need

We are aiming to raise a total of $20,000 for the film, with a stretch goal of $25,000.

All funds raised will go towards things like:

  • Cast and Crew
  • Equipment Rentals
  • Insurance
  • Period wardrobe and props
  • Production Design
  • Securing Locations
  • Editing and Post-Production Services
  • Catering and Craft Services

Stretch Goal

At $20,000 we are able to make this short film, but certain things will have to be cut to do so. If we reach higher funding, we will secure a stronger future for the short film:

Additional support from a stretch goals would be invaluable:

  • +$5,000 - Additional funds would be allocated to the VFX team, covering aspects like compositing, roto, matte painting, etc., enhancing scenes like the football stands to create a realistic crowd, adding digital wardrobe, set pieces, or other period elements to ensure authenticity.  We have access to a VFX team in Los Angeles with credits on studio films who have volunteered their talents on Laura’s past projects.  Tough Enough will entail a larger scope of work.
  • + $2,500 - Covers festival submissions and fees
  • + $5,000 - Allows for higher-tier equipment and production design

Our Team

Laura Somers (Writer & Director)

Laura Somers is a writer, director, editor, producer. Tired of waiting for permission to do what she always dreamed of--direct her own feature film--she raised funds on Seed & Spark and went back to her hometown of Houston, TX to make her feature directorial debut, Rich Kids. After Rich Kids won 16 festival awards, she struck a deal with Premiere Entertainment for worldwide sales. Her domestic distributor, ITN, licensed the film to Netflix where it premiered in February 2020—almost unheard of these days for a no-budget drama with unknown actors. Laura is originally from Texas and has lived in many pockets and communities around the country and has a deep love of characters who are outcasts fighting for dignity.

A creative visionary with a finger on the pulse of American consciousness and its youth, Laura is interested in telling stories that encourage viewers to create empathy for one another and advance humanity through creative storytelling by drawing characters who are strong, capable, independent, and thoughtful people who are fighting to have dignity in their lives and struggling with issues in today’s society. Much of her work is about subverting expectations and drawing stereotypes out of their boxes.

As a director, she has been selected for fellowships and mentorships with Women In Film, Film Independent, and SHOOT, and her work has received financial support from Banana Republic, Vanity Fair, IBM, UCLA, and the City of Austin. Her productions have been highlighted in American Theater Magazine, New York Magazine, Remezcla, Vanity Fair, The W Hotels and more.
