Short Summary

Dark Matters Film Festival is a multi-day cinematic showcase dedicated to horror, science fiction, dark fantasy and black comedy in the heart of the American Southwest. It’s the first genre-specific film festival in New Mexico. It was launched in 2012 with a one-day teaser event called “Horror Bites.” This day-long collection of more than 40 short films from around the globe was a rousing success and whetted appetites for our first, full-fledged event (scheduled rise from the lab table May 17-19, 2013). Shorts, features and documentaries from around the globe (Spain, Mexico, Sweden, Canada, France, Italy, USA) will be spotlighted. Our opening night film is the supernatural action flick COMPOUND FRACTURE, starring TYLER MANE (X-Men, Halloween I & II). Tyler will be our special guest for a post-film Q&A!

Though 2013 marks the first full year of the festival, organizers have been instrumental in the region’s film industry for years. Staff members have founded such events as the Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (10 years and counting), the Alibi Short Film Fiesta (10 years), the Guild Cinema’s Midnight Movie Madness Screenings (11 years and running) and the newly minted Cinemagnifico Latin Film Festival.

What We Need & What You Get

We need to get programs, tickets and other materials printed before the box office opens. In order to get our inaugural festival off the ground, we need to drum up some ticket sales. Tickets and passes are scheduled to officially go on sale in late April. You can get in on the darkness early, though, by being a part of our IndieGoGo fundraising campaign. Rewards include first pick of tickets and other great swag. All funds raised will ensure an exciting first year filled with films, guests and other scary surprises. Programmers are scouring the ranks of film festivals, distributors and independent filmmakers to secure the best content possible. A solid cushion of pre-sale tickets—combined with money from our sponsors and matching-fund grants from the State of New Mexico—will guarantee our first year starts out screaming. With luck, it will also set the tone for years of shocking cinema to come.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you're a filmmaker, a distributor or an independent film label, we'd love to have you on board for Dark Matters. If you've got a movie, send us a screener. If you've got prizes to give away, send us some swag. If you'd like to advertise to our sci-fi-addled, blood-crazed, fantasy-friendly audiences, contact us about advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
