The Blue Boat
-Kathleen Jamie
How late the daylight edges
toward the northern night
as though journeying
in a blue boat, gilded in mussel shell
with, slung from its mast, a lantern
like our old idea of the soul
Upon reading Kathleen Jamie's poem, one is immediately transported to a world of forlorn ships and wayward sailors. Her poem also serves as a metaphor for San Francisco's storied relationship with the sea.
Six years ago I returned home to San Francisco to shoot my NYU thesis, "The Blue Boat". However, before filming could commence, I was brutally mugged and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Now, after all these years, I am completing the film.
Your support will bring me one step closer to realizing my dream of sharing this wonderful homage to San Francisco's maritime treasures with the world.
Levi dreams of sailing "The Sandra" out to sea, but his father Nathan has vowed to never take it on the water again. Nathan is resigned to sitting on the boat, wallowing in the memory of his late wife Sandy in between shots. As the days pass, the two survive by collecting money from tourists who have come to watch Nathan perform sea shanties at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Levi's anxiety grows while his dream of sailing drifts out to sea.
Sadly, the city's magical relationship with it's seaside locales hasn't been presented prominently in film. 'The Blue Boat' will change this trend and explore these worlds through the eyes of Levi, a hardscrabble adolescent who dreams of sailing the seven seas.
By sharing these unseen worlds with an expectant audience, the film will expose a wide array of new viewers to the beauty of the city's often unseen maritime treasures. And with the America's Cup approaching, the film's sailing themes are perfectly timed to garner attention for the sport as well.
