We are the Lackawanna Cutoff Historical Committee, an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit group dedicated to restoring the Greendell station in Green Township, New Jersey. Opened in 1911 along a new route that even today is an engineering marvel, the station had an agent until the 1930's and remained a flag stop through the Erie-Lackawanna merger in 1960. The last freight delivery was in 1979. Since then it has fallen into disrepair at the hands of mother nature and frequent vandalism.
Our end goal? Preserve this gem of our past and convert the interior into a museum dedicated to the Lackawanna Railroad and other local history.
This project will be a long and expensive affair. Just a few years ago many federal grants existed that could have subsidized our work, but today they are all but dried up. In addition New Jersey Transit aims to restore service to this part of the Cutoff. Instead of the structure being used as a station, NJTransit plans to use it as a small maintenance area. Preserving Greendell Station now is our best option for allowing future generations to enjoy and learn from its' unique history.
