Haciendo fotos a turistas en una plaza de Madrid, Ernesto conoce a Susan. Se gustan, claro, aunque no inmediatamente. Pero los dioses no nos son siempre favorables. Ni las películas tampoco.
INTRO
“Above The Moon” is a low cost feature film, a tiny film that I am going to produce with the help of anyone that wants to do so. It will be independent and personal, it is about feelings and emotions I feel deeply touched with, and I plan to avoid the common places of the main film language.
“Above The Moon” es un largometraje low-cost, una película pequeña que voy a producir junto con quienes queráis ayudarme. Es un largometraje independiente y personal, se inspira en temas y sentimientos que a mi me conmueven, y me propongo evitar los lugares comunes del cine convencional.
ABOUT ME / SOBRE MI
I’ve been dreaming to do this for years, making a little movie while I write it, shooting slowly while I improve the script on rehearsals. I wanted to be able to do it with a small camera, my mac, a couple of actors and just two or three people in the team, the houses of somefriends and the streets of Madrid. Sure, I still want to keep making “normal” movies, but also I want to be able to shoot something so small as to shoot it whenever I decide too, whenever I feel I am ready. And now I’ve decided to shoot this one.
The concept is simple: a self-reflective film about cerebral-romantic films, with Madrid on the background. A bunch of long scenes, long takes, and great and significant places. Also, a lot of things happen these days in my country, some will inevitably get into the movie.
He soñado con hacer esto durante años, rodar una pequeña película mientras la escribo, rodarla despacio mientras mejoramos el guión en los ensayos. Me imaginaba haciendola con una pequeña cámara, mi mac, un par de actores y un equipo de solo dos o tres personas más, rodando en las calles de Madrid y en casas de amigos. Claro que quiero seguir haciendo peliculas “normales”, pero también quiero hacer películas como esta, tan pequeñas que no tenga que pedirle permiso a nadie para hacerlas, que pueda rodarla cuando yo quiera. Y ahora estoy deseando hacer esta.
El concepto es sencillo: una película autoreflexiva sobre películas cerebrales-romanticas, o sea una comedia romantica y cerebral sobre otras peliculas como ella, con Madrid al fondo. Pocas secuencias, largos planos, y espacios significativos. Además, están pasando muchas cosas en este pais, y algunas van a colarse en la película.
A SIMPLE STORY, BUT JUST TO START WITH / UNA HISTORIA SENCILLA, SOLO PARA EMPEZAR
“Above The Moon” tells the encounter of a madrilian photographer on his thirties, unemployed, and a foreign girl a little younger. At the beginning, it seems another international love story. Just one more. A sort of romantic comedy that happens in Madrid, on which their main roles speak English. Then it starts to get complicated, persons and places start to change and they don’t look like that anymore.
“Above The Moon” narra el encuentro entre un fotógrafo madrileño treintañero en paro y una chica extranjera. Al principio, parece una historia de amor internacional o de amor sin fronteras. Una más. En la que sus protagonistas hablan en inglés. Una comedia romántica que ocurre en Madrid, en la que la ciudad tiene un papel protagonista. Luego esto se va complicando, los lugares y las personas dejan de ser lo que parecían.
THE SANDFORD MEISNER TECHNIQUE / LA TÉCNICA DE SANDFORD MEISNER
I am working with two great actors I’ve been lucky to find while casting, Helen y Bruno. We work using an acting technique I have studied these lasts years with Stephen Bayly and Mark Wakeling from Actors Temple, Sandy Meisner Technique. It is based on the imagination of the actor and on "the reality of doing", as Meisner liked to say. Rehearsals are going fine, we are searching for that truth, and everything has to be true to be in the movie.
We work with a not very common script, more open and without the definitive dialogs, everything is being checked and revised on rehearsals. This time I want to write while we shoot, letting the stream of the movie to dictate us where to go, finding which is it and how to tell it. That’s why we are going to shoot chronologically, and the definitive scenes are going to be find using improvisations, on rehearsals and while shooting.
He empezado trabajando con dos actores estupendos que he tenido la suerte de encontrar en el proceso de casting, Helen y Bruno. Trabajamos utilizando una técnica de interpretación que he estudiado estos últimos años con Stephen Bayly y Mark Wakeling de Actors Temple, la técnica de Sandford Meisner. Es una técnica que se basa en la imaginación del actor y en "la verdad de lo que hace", eso decía Meisner. Los ensayos van bien, avanzamos buscando que todo tenga el aire de la verdad, que pase lo que pase sea de verdad.
Contamos con un guión diferente al habitual, más abierto, un guión sin los diálogos, y en el que todo estará siempre sujeto a revisión. Se trata de escribir al la vez que rodamos, dejándonos llevar por la corriente de la historia, descubriendo cuál es y cómo contarla. Por eso rodaremos en orden cronológico y las escena definitivas serán encontradas a base de improvisaciones, en los ensayos y durante el rodaje.
THE AIR OF A COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISE / EL AIRE DE UNA COOPERATIVA
We are going to shoot inspired for the spirit of cooperatives. I am assembling a very small team, absolutely different to the one of a mainstream movie. There will be no electricians nor make up department, no art director, at least not in the credits, because we will have everything in the movie, just in a different way, as one person will be able to do many different things.
The actors and the rest of this small team will work on the film without being paid for it, they want to do the film and they bet for that, and for the pleasure of doing it. This bet deserves a prize, so they have a part on the benefits. So they are producers of this film too.
Rodaremos inspirándonos en el espíritu de las cooperativas. Estoy organizando un equipo diminuto, en nada parecido al de un largo convencional. Sin eléctricos ni maquilladores, sin figurinista ni dirección de arte, pero con todo en realidad sólo que de otra manera, porque habrá gente capaz de hacer muchas cosas diferentes.
El equipo y los actores participan en la película sin recibir ninguna retribución, apuestan por el trabajo y por el placer de hacerla. Su apuesta merece un premio, así que cuentan con una participación en los beneficios, son también por lo tanto productores de este proyecto.
LOW-COST & LOW-FI
I am deeply inspired by the spirit of those “garage groups”, that recorded their songs in the garage of their homes, with a 4 tracks recorder. I look for this low fi style. Against the hyperrealism of the images of today, we will search for the low resolution. And everything, every choice we make, will be related to this low fi philosophy.
Me inspiro en esos “grupos de garaje”, que grababan sus canciones en el garaje de su casa con una grabadora de 4 pistas. Busco ese estilo low-fi, diríamos. Frente al hiperrealismo de la imagen actual, apostaremos por la baja resolución. Y todo deberá responder esa filosofía.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH THE MONEY / A QUÉ DESTINAREMOS EL DINERO
I am going to put in this movie 5.000€ (6500$), and I hope we can get in Indiegogo at least another 9.000€, although some more could be very helpful. Anyway, with that money we can cover the main expenses of the shooting: buying the basic equipment (a video camera of less than a 2.000€, some LED lights, a small digital recorder, some Hard Disks, etcetera). This money will also help to care for the look of the movie and to look after the persons that take part on the movie (wardrobe and atrezzo, but also meals, transportations and locations). There is also an important entry dedicated to promotion (web, t-shirts, posters, online diffusion), I am convinced of the potential of international distribution of this movie (it's small, I know, but it's there).
Truth is that it would be impossible to shoot a film with this tiny budget, if the movie would not have been designed knowing that. I mean that since the beginning and the writing of the script I’ve had that in mind, that’s why I know that we can do it, because we have the story appropriate to make it.
Yo aportaré 5000 euros y espero conseguir en Indiegogo al menos otros 9.000, aunque nos vendría bien superar esa cifra. Pero con eso podemos cubrir los gastos mas importantes del rodaje: comprar el equipo básico adecuado para rodar y montar (una cámara de menos de 1000 €, algunas luces LED, una pequeña grabadora digital, discos duros, etc.) También nos ayudará a cuidar el aspecto de la película y a tratar con cuidado a todos los que participan en el rodaje (vestuario y atrezo pero también comidas, transportes, espacios, etc.). También hay una partida importante dedicada a promoción (web, camisetas, carteles, difusión online y DVD, difusión en festivales, etc.), estoy convencido de que la película tiene potencial de difusión internacional, pequeño pero lo tiene.
Sería imposible hacer una película con este diminuto presupuesto si no estuviera diseñada teniendo eso en mente, es decir que ya desde su concepción y la escritura de su guión esto ha estado presente, por eso se que podemos hacerlo, cuento con los medios y la historia adecuada para ello.
CALENDAR / CALENDARIO
We plan to start shooting the 24th of next June. We will work slowly, week by week, for months if needed . We will only work when we are really ready and the light is perfect, only in the appropriate hours of the day. And, if needed, we wil come back to reshoot if something does not work fine. We will not show the movie until we are not really happy with all of it.
Queremos empezar a rodar el 24 de Junio. Se trata de rodar despacio, semana a semana, a lo largo de los meses que sea preciso. Rodaremos cuando estemos preparados y sea el momento, esperando la luz de la mejor hora del día. Y volveremos, si hace falta, a los lugares de rodaje a repetir lo que no quede bien. No enseñaremos la película hasta que no estamos realmente contentos con toda ella.
I promised also to keep you informed, periodically, about the production and about any novelties that happen to us. We believe that we will have the movie ready for showing it to you in the next 13 months after start shooting. I promise you all will have the chance to be our first spectators.
