We have been working on the Afrolatinos documentary for over five years, traveled to more than 18 countries and have well over 200 interviews documenting all that is Afro culture throughout Latin America. This is an ambitious project. In January, unfortunately we had to stop production due to lack of funding. This is a self funded project and a labor of love. We are inviting you to Un Llamado y Respuesta! A Call and Response! To you, our community, nuestra comunidad, for help to cross the finish line and bring these stories, nuestra historia, to the world!

What is Afrolatinos :The Untaught Story?

Afrolatinos The Untaught Story is a documentary television series independently produced by Creador Pictures, LLC. This is the story of the estimated 150 million invisible afrodescendants currently living in Latin America. Afrolatinos is a seven part series in English and Spanish, that shows the rich culture and shares the contributions of the enslaved Africans who arrived to the Caribbean, Central and South America. This history is seldom told or often omitted when talking about these regions of the world.

The program aims to better understand religious connections and distinctions between the Catholic Church as well as the Yoruba and Voodoo traditions. We learn about the influence of Africa through dance and music. The drum is a very significant instrument used in Latin music but how many people know its history? We also have a segment on Afro-Latino gastronomy, which will show the many dishes with African influence seen in every day life. Identity and racial discrimination are just a few of the many social issues effecting Afrolatinos.  We interview people from the U.S to Argentina about issues such as self-hate, the idea of good hair, bad hair, interracial marriages, oppression, and exploitation.

This documentary takes you on a journey to meet Afrolatinos throughout Spanish-speaking nations, including Haiti and Brazil. Our mission is to teach the uninformed and initiate social change throughout Latin America so that this important part of our history is not forgotten!

Where will the funds go?

The clip above is a brief sample of the filming and production that we have accomplished in five years with our own money, time, and dedication. With your contribution we will be able to continue to put the blood, sweat, and tears into the last legs of production for the film. Every donation will help the writers, editors, cameramen, and producers bring the story of Afrolatinos to a worldwide audience so that this piece of our history is not forgotten.

What are the plans for the documentary?

The plan is to have this film distributed to television and film festivals so that the lives and stories of Afrolatinos can be brought to the world and the communities can get the awareness, support, and respect they deserve.

Who’s behind AfroLatinos: The Untaught Story?

For Renzo, it was a segment he did on his syndicated show American Latino TV where he brought Afrolatinos to the mainstream. For Alicia, it was a journey of self-discovery which resulted in an article she wrote and published in Urban Latino Magazine, entitled Two Cultures Marching to One Drum.

Hemos estado trabajando en el documental Afrolatinos, durante más de cinco años, viajamos a más de 18 países y realizamos más de 200 entrevistas que documentan todo lo que es la cultura afro en América Latina. Se trata de un proyecto ambicioso. Pero por desgracia, a principios de este año nos vimos en la obligación de detener la producción por falta de financiamiento. Afrolatinos es un proyecto independiente el cual es producido con fondos propios y motivado por el amor a nuestro trabajo. Por tal razón, te estamos invitando a que formes parte de la campaña “Un Llamado y Respuesta.” Un llamado y respuesta para nuestras comunidades afrolatinas, para que nos ayuden a alcanzar nuestra meta y de esa manera podremos mostrar, Nuestra Historia ante el mundo.

¿Qué  es Afrolatinos: La historia que nunca nos contaron?

Afrolatinos La historia que nunca nos contaron es una serie documental para televisión producida de manera independiente por Creador Pictures, LLC. Esta es la historia de los más de 150 millones de afro descendientes invisibles que viven actualmente en América Latina. La serie Afrolatinos  esta producida en ingles y español, compuesta por siete partes, que muestran la riqueza cultural y las contribuciones de los Africanos que llegaron esclavizados al Caribe, América Central y América del Sur. Esta historia rara vez es contada y a menudo se omite cuando se habla de estas regiones del mundo.

El programa tiene como objetivo comprender mejor las conexiones y diferencias religiosas entre la Iglesia Católica y las tradiciones Yoruba y Vudú. Aprendemos acerca de la influencia de África a través de la danza y la música. El tambor es un instrumento muy importante utilizado en la música latina, pero ¿cuánta gente sabe su historia? También tenemos un segmento sobre la gastronomía Afro-Latina, que mostrará los diversos platos con influencia Africana que se ve en la vida cotidiana de estas comunidades. La identidad y la discriminación racial son sólo algunos de los muchos problemas sociales que afectan a Afrolatinos. Entrevistamos a personas desde los EE.UU. hasta Argentina sobre temas tales como el auto-odio, el pensamiento sobre lo que significa el  pelo bueno, pelo malo, los matrimonios interraciales, la opresión y la explotación.

Este documental te lleva en un viaje donde conocerás todas las naciones Afrolatinos, incluyendo Haití y Brasil. Nuestra misión es de crear conciencia e iniciar un cambio social en toda América Latina a fin de que esta parte importante de nuestra historia no se olvide.

¿Dónde están los fondos?

El clip anterior es una breve muestra de la filmación y producción que hemos logrado en cinco años, con nuestro propio dinero, tiempo y dedicación. Con su apoyo monetario podremos seguir poniendo la sangre, el sudor y las lágrimas en las grabaciones que nos faltan para terminar la producción del documental. Cada donación ayudará a los escritores, editores, camarógrafos y productores a llevar a cabo la historia de los Afrolatinos  a una audiencia mundial con en el fin de que esta parte de nuestra historia no sea olvidada.

¿Cuáles son los planes para Afrolatinos?

El plan es que este documental sea distribuido en los festivales de cine y televisión para que las vidas e historias de los/as Afrolatinos/as puedan ser visto ante el mundo, y con esto lograr despertar la conciencia de los demás y de esta manera comenzar a dar el apoyo y el respeto que estas comunidades afro descendientes merecen.

¿Quién está detrás del documental Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron?

“Hey familia soy Renzo Devia, Productor Ejecutivo y Director, y Alicia Anabel Santos, escritora y productora del documental Afrolatinos: La Historia Que Nunca Nos Contaron. Los dos estamos muy apasionados por contar las historias que representan la cultura latina.”

Para Renzo, en su programa de televisión llamado, “American Latino TV”  tenia un segmento que se dedicaba exclusivamente a destacar los principales personajes de las comunidades Afrolatinos. Para Alicia, era un viaje de auto-descubrimiento cuando escribió y publicó un artículo en la revista “Urban Latino”, titulado, Two Cultures Marching to One Drum.
