If you were in an isolated situation and faced with a group of attackers
bent on having their way with with you, would you know what to do?
Ariel
is a new short film about a shy, diminutive woman who, in a lonely
parking garage, is confronted by four such attackers and must find a way
to survive.
In the short film
Ariel we get to solve the mystery of how our petite heroine, Ariel, prevails against four larger attackers.
Hello and welcome to the "Ariel Indiegogo campaign”. My name is John Hidalgo. I am a student in
Austin Community College's Radio, Television and Film program. I have been making short films as student projects for about the last three years. One of my recent films
Cthulhu's Witnesses was recently accepted into and shown at the
H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Ariel is the film I will be shooting as an independent study project in ACC's Film Style Production class in the Spring semester.
About the Film
In
Ariel
we get to explore one example of how a person can persevere and
prevail against a brutal assault. It also looks at some martial arts
concepts that one could apply in just such a situation. In a sense,
Ariel
is a martial arts film that is not a martial arts film. Rather than
being a high spectacle, flashy action film with flurries of punches and
kicks and tons of wire work,
Ariel takes a smart, subtle look
at martial arts technique that while on the surface looks like nothing,
the outcome turns out to be devastating upon closer inspection.
Origin of the Idea
The idea for
Ariel
has been with me for about three years. When it came to me I had
already written, produced and directed a couple of student projects. I
knew that at some point in the near future I would produce it. The
concept came from a combination of things. A long time ago I had gone
through rape crisis intervention training through the
Texas Association Against Sexual Assault to supplement assault prevention classes I was
teaching. I had been studying martial arts in the
Bujinkan Dōjō system
for quite some time. My motivation for teaching assault prevention
classes was partially because I wanted to bring more students into our
class but also because I had a number of friends and family members
that had been assaulted and felt strongly about the subject.
What is Needed
Ariel
is well on its way. Pre-production has begun. One of the locations has
been nailed down and others are currently being scouted. Auditions
have been held and all key roles have been cast. I am also in the
process of filling the key crew roles.
I want to make
Ariel
the best quality short film that I can so can share it with you. To
make that happen I am looking to raise $3,000. These funds will be used
to cover production costs including costumes, gear and, most
importantly, paying cast and crew. Funds will also be used to submit
Ariel
to film festivals such as Austin Film Festival, Sundance, Toronto Film
Festival, Cannes, Berlin Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Los
Angeles Film Festival, Seattle Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and
Comic Con Film Festival,
