Short Summary
Hi. We're Wasanii Mtaani Ni Sisi.We are an organization that mainly does music, arts and technology projects. We are a group of more than 50 artists from various tribes based in Nairobi, Kenya. We provide a platform for underground Emcees who are both visual and verbal artists while at the same time creating positive social change in our society.
Behold we introduce to you the Autonomous Interactive Radio by Reid Bingham and Sean McIntyre, which will be developed on Ljudmila during event Interactivos?'12 Ljubljana: Obsolete Technologies of the Future.
AIR is an autonomous, neighborhood level, interactive radio station. The micro-radio station downloads, queues, and broadcasts the audio files you email it.
My name is Kevin Ovita Teddy.I’m a research coordinator and an artist and I’m going to represent my group in attending the AIR DIY workshop at Ljubljana, Digital Media Lab in Slovenia on September 5th to 15th as a trainee on all technical aspects of running our own radiostation. I will pass the experience to more than 50+ youth leaders in Nairobi, Kenya’s informal settlements. But in order to do this, we need your help.
What We Need & What You Get
We need to raise 999 dollars to cover the cost of an air ticket to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Failure to do this will mean that we will not implement our community radio idea we have been toying with from 2006.Corporate radio stations do not give our kinda music airplay.
So we're turning to our strongest supporters to ask for contributions. In exchange, we're throwing you an African Poetry Party Day in Loresho, making a song and video about you plus merchandise including rap chocolate bars with your favorite rapper’s image etched on them, Miriam makeba t-shirts and an East African music mix coupled with African Drums.
If we don't reach our goal the raised funds will go towards mobility costs for attending similar workshops for our Nairobi Rap and Research Group programme. My food and accomodation is already catered for at this sax pub hostel.
The Impact
The community radio which will be reproduced in Nairobi’s Kangemi area will be called “Nairo” (Nairobi Autonomous Interactive Radio). It will have a reach of more than 120,000+ youths in the informal settlements who have been pushed aside in socio-political and economic processes. They will use it to monitor such community public processes as devolved funds with major direct and indirect employment prospects from local content.
We have successfully convened the first and one of a kind African chapter of the Nairobi Rap and Research Group at major Nairobi Slums, Goethe Institute and Sarakasi Trust. We are currently running a training for amatuer writers for the Nairobi Slum Magazine.
