Backing Bella

We have been publishing since 2007 - focusing on bringing hope and ideas to the national debate - and writing across culture and politics. But now we need your support to fund an editor and a contributor in the important year ahead. We think we have a unique role to play.

Award-winning novelist Ewan Morrison has written that:

"Bella is doing important work in broadening the importance of independence far beyond the tunnel vision of the politicians, to ask really what kind of culture and economy can we make for ourselves."

It's clear that Scotland's media is dominated by a pro-Union corporate media. But the time for complaining about it is over, now it's time to change that. Joan McAlpine MSP has said:

"Bella has been hugely important in broadening the debate on Scotland's future. It's cultural contribution in recent years has enriched our national life. At a time when the indigenous media is in decline it is vital that high quality online ventures focused on Scotland, like Bella, are given every support and encouragement."

In the last few years we've:

published thousands of articles
had more than two and a half million views
hosted live events in the Edinburgh Festival
held a massive 'After Party' at the Bongo Club
sold-out print editions of our journal 'Closer'
helped develop lots of new writers including: Irvine Welsh, Andy Wightman, Ewan Morrison, Lucy Conway, Alan Bissett, Isobel Lindsay, Alastair McIntosh, Svenja Merricks, Shaun Burnie, Lesley Riddoch, Cat Boyd, Dougald Hine, Hannah McGill, Kevin Williamson, Rebecca Nada-Rajah, Niki Seth-Smith and loads more (see a full list here)

But we need to do much more.

What We Need & What You Get

Bella Caledonia has been publishing since Autumn 2007 and now, as we enter the referendum year, it's time to step-up our focus, our quality and our output. To do this we're asking for your support, today launching a crowd-sourced funding appeal to back an editors post and a new monthly contributor.

One such new writer is George Rosie, one of the most experienced investigative journalists of our time, who has previously worked on the renowned Sunday Times team as Scottish Affairs Correspondent and who wrote the acclaimed Diomhair programme for BBC Scotland.

We want to raise £40,000 to begin to redress the balance of media bias and to play our part amongst the many great new platforms and voices that are beginning to be heard. This will got towards a full-time editorial post, to back George Rosie's new column, to develop materials to promote the project, and to three further editions of Closer, our print offshoot.

Currently - and for the last six years - we've been operating entirely on a voluntary basis, so this will take us to a new level of output and professionalism.

We'll be taking the message beyond the usual suspects of the already-engaged and the already converted, we'll be launching new projects like Bellavision (a monthly live video discussion forum) and loads more. We hope you can support us.
