Short Summary

My name is Erin Barra - a producer, writer, artist and educator in a music industry where women are largely underrepresented and overlooked. Over the past 4 years I have proudly become an authoritative voice for women in audio and music tech. I have received much support in my lifetime and feel strongly that it's time to pay it forward by empowering the next generation of women to stand up and be heard!!! There are very few existing role models of women producers, engineers, composers or any position in music tech. It's long past time for us to take our rightful place beside the men and show young women that anything is possible. 

Beats By Girlzis a non-traditional, creative and educational recording-arts campaign designed by Erin Barra in cooperation with the Lower Eastside Girl’s Club of New York.

Built in response to a workshop piloted in 2011, the campaign will raise funds to underwrite a music education course designed to empower under-privileged girls in music technology by providing them with the guidance, access, tools and role-support to develop their interest (and ultimately their ability to pursue career opportunities) in music production, composition, engineering, etc.

This ‘female-powered intro to music tech’ program (scheduled to begin in Spring 2014) will be open to students of the LES Girls Club between the ages of 8-18, and the classes which will be taught by Erin, will form the basis for a companion web-series to be utilized universally by aspiring young artists, and/or as a template for those who may wish to replicate this initiative in their own communities.

This initiative combines with Erin’s own philosophy on music copyright reform, and to underscore that commitment, in addition to handling all aspects of curriculum development, studio and technical set-up, etc., she will share uncompressed stems of a new group of recordings she has recently produced, edited and co-engineered as an integral aspect of the curriculum.

Erin is a Berklee Grad and professional Writer/Producer/Engineer/Artist based out of Brooklyn, NY. She is a authoritative voice in the NY Audio scene and for Women in Music/Tech. As a freelance specialist for leading music software company Ableton Live, Erin has been running user groups, clinics and workshops, reaching out to educate and support the electronic community for the past 3 years on a national level.

The Lower East Side Girls Club

The Lower Eastside Girls Club provides a place where girls and young women 8-23 can grow, learn, have fun, and develop confidence in themselves and their ability to make a difference in the world. By delivering strong arts, literacy, science, health and leadership programs they provide girls with the vision to plan – and the tools to build – their future.

In order to break through the glass ceiling we need to start at the ground floor and provide the type of role support which is largely unavailable to young women.

THE ALBUM - 'Undefined' 

My new and fourth project, 'Undefined' will release Feb 11th, but all those who contribute as little as $10 to the campaign will receive their copy before Christmas.
