There's no civil tradition more worthy of renewal, than Jerusalem's WATERMELON "BASTAS"

Back in the day - Where it naturally started

The old-timers among us still remember, with a spark in their eyes, the summery "city of lights" that used to be constructed on the empty lots that were left on the seam between east & west Jerusalem after the war in 1967.  >>>

what was otherwise a deserted no man's land grew full of life
every evening and well into the night.
The sweet memory brings back a charmed moment of an open-hearted encounter in a zone where everyone was equal regardless of religion, nationality, age or gender >>>

The Bastas of the 70’s were the creation of residents from both sides of the city who demanded their rights to plan and determine the appearance and the function of the public space without waiting for official permits and orderly planning procedures >>>

The project - thoughts of a future of coexistence

Somewhere in the 1980's, this beautiful tradition was stopped.
Some say it was the city council demanding permits, others say it was due to cultural sensetivities, but the real reason is not fully known until this day >>>

Last summer, we (The muslala group, together with friends, artists and cooperating cultural leaders in Jerusalem) decided to try and  revive the tradition, with a twist.
We believe this project can truely make a change in the community around the meeting point, and hopefully spread out to the rest of Jerusalem, Israel, and even internationally >>>

Unlike the "Bastas" of yore that were set up without permits as businesses for profit, the Basta "Between Green and Red" is a
non-profit art project created through the legal and well-ordered cooperation of dozens of people, groups and organizations who all believe in a simple idea: let's get together, the rest will sort itself out… >>>

Last summer - history in the making

The first "Between green and red" event was held in the summer of 2012, in cooperation with "Jerusalem season of culture", and lasted for a week >>>

Many people from a veriety of cultural backgrounds kept coming, night after night, brought friends, and enjoyed the most diverse and peaceful meeting point in town... And lots of WATERMELON >>>

Here's a few of last summer's delightfull moments: 

The Basta is located at a unique point – the juncture between Jerusalem's Old City and the new one, between its west and east side, just at the interface which was once the no-man's land between Jordan and Israel. Both symbolically and practically there is no better place to encounter Jerusalem at its most colorful diversity and singularity, to enjoy the bounty and to celebrate coming together >>>

This summer - The money time

Needless to say, last summer left us wanting more!
Now we strive to make it a summery tradition once more :)
It's not going to be easy, but Rome also wasn't built in one day.
Renewing a tradition lost in the past, and working for a more open minded society in Jerusalem, is something that takes a lot of energies and thought. There are many sensetivities we must understand, working in the public space. Musrara neighborhood has been for a long time, and still is a place of tensions and conflict on one hand, and diversity and beauty on the other  >>>

So, our plans for this summer includes two weeks of performances, world music, poetry & spoken word, story telling , experimental film festival, and of course – sweet, red WATERMELON with salted cheese. Hopefully people will come again like last summer, and may we be able to serve a slice of watermelon, and have a good talk with every stranger and friend as one >>>

what do we the donations for?

“Between Green and Red” is a non-profit interdisciplinary art project and a collaboration between dozens of artists, creators, volunteers and organizations >>>

The cost of the project is tremendous but still, one of the things we are not willing to compromise on, is that the event will be completely open to people from all cultural backgrounds, and absolutely free of charge! That's the only way we can bring such a variety of people together >>>

here's a little explanation of where the money goes
some of it is prepayed by money we did mannage to get from ,
some will be paid only after the event this summer will end,
and some is going for keeping the "WATERMELON BASTA"
as tradition for next year as well, and hopefully many years to come:

בין ירוק לאדם 

נקודת מפגש תרבותית בלב ירושלים

הרחק מעבר לרעיונות שלנו על ”בסדר” ועל ”לא בסדר” ישנו שדה. אפגוש אותך שם - ג'לאל א-דין רומי,( 1273-1207).

אין מסורת אזרחית יותר מתאימה לחדשה מאשר באסטות האבטיחים של ירושלים!

בימים ההם – כשהכל התחיל בטבעיות
---------------------------------

הוותיקים שבינינו עוד זוכרים, עם ניצוץ בעיניהם, את "עיר האורות" הקיצית שהייתה מוקמת בתחילת עונת האבטיח, משער שכם ועד מעבר מנדלבאום. באזור שטח ההפקר שחיבר בין מזרח ומערב ירושלים אחרי המלחמה ב1967.

השטח שחדל להיות שטח הפקר היה מתמלא חיים מדי ערב עד השעות הקטנות של הלילה. הזיכרון המתוק מעלה רגעים קסומים, ומחזיר לרגע מפגש תמים ואנושי אל מרחב שבו כולם שווים ללא הבדלי דת, לאום או מין

הבאסטות של שנות ה- 70 היו פרי יצירתם של אזרחים משני צדי העיר, שתבעו לעצמם את הזכות לתכנן ולקבוע כיצד יראה ויפעל המרחב הציבורי מבלי להמתין לאישורים ולהליכי תכנון מוסדרים.

הפרויקט עצמו – מחשבות עתידיות על דו קיום

מתישהו בשנות ה80, המסורת היפה הזו הופסקה. יש הטוענים שזה קשור לדרישת אישורים מהעירייה, אחרים אומרים שזה קשור לרגישויות חברתיות אבל את הסיבה האמיתית אף אחד לא יודע עד היום.

בקיץ הקודם, אנחנו (קבוצת מוסללה יחד עם חברים, אמנים, ועונת התרבות הירושלמית) החלטנו לנסות ולהחיות את המסורת הזו עם פן מעט שונה. אנו מאמינים שהפרויקט הזה יכול לחולל שינוי אמיתי בקהילה שמסביב לנקודת המפגש ובתקווה להעביר את המסר לאנשים ירושלים, ישראל ואף לרחבי העולם.

שלא כמו הבאסטות העסקיות של אז, שהוקמו למטרות רווח אך ללא אישורים, הבאסטה "בין ירוק לאדום" היא פרויקט אמנות שאינו למטרות רווח. הפרויקט נוצר בזכות שיתוף פעולה חוקי ומוסדר של עשרות אנשים, קבוצות וארגונים המאמינים ברעיון פשוט – בוא ניפגש, השאר כבר יסתדר...
 

הקיץ האחרון – ההיסטוריה בפעולה

האירוע הראשון "בין ירוק לאדום" התקיים בקיץ של 2012 בשיתוף פעולה עם עונת התרבות הירושלמית ונמשך שבוע. הרבה אנשים ממגוון של תרבויות הגיעו והמשיכו להגיע ערב אחר ערב, הביאו חברים ונהנו ממקום המפגש המגוון והשליו ביותר בעיר... ובעיקר מהרבה אבטיח

הנה כמה רגעים קסומים מהקיץ של שנה שעברה:

הבאסטה ממוקמת במקום ייחודי – במפגש בין העיר העתיקה לחדשה, בין מזרח ומערב, בדיוק במקום שפעם היה שטח ההפקר בין ירדן לישראל. מקום שהינו סימבולי ובעצם אין מקום טוב יותר לפגוש את ירושלים על כל צבעיה, גווניה וייחודה, ליהנות מהנדיבות שיש למקום ומהמפגש עצמו.

הקיץ הזה - זמן אמת!

מיותר להגיד שהאירוע שנה שעברה השאיר טעם של עוד!

אנחנו שואפים לקיים את האירוע שוב הקיץ, ומעבר לזה, להפוך אותו למסורת חדשה!
זה לא יהיה קל, אך גם רומא לא נבנתה ביום אחד. לחדש מסורת שנשכחה בעבר, ולהתכוונן לחברה פתוחה יותר פה בירושלים זה דבר הדורש הרבה אנרגיה ומחשבה. יש הרבה רגישויות שעלינו להבין כאשר פועלים במרחב הציבורי. שכונת מוסררה ידועה כבר שנים במתחים וקונפליקטים הפועלים יחד עם מגוון ויופי ייחודי. 

אז מה מצפה לנו השנה? אנו מתכננים שבועיים של הופעות, מוסיקת עולם, שירה, מספרי סיפורים, פסטיבל סרטים וכמובן אבטיח אדום ומתוק יחד עם גבינה בולגרית. בתקווה אנשים יבואו שנית כמו בקיץ הקודם, ונוכל להגיש אבטיח ולשבת עם זר ולהרגישו כחבר.

למה אנחנו צריכים את התרומות?

"בין ירוק לאדום" הוא פרויקט אמנות רב-תחומית ללא מטרות רווח ושותפים לו עשרות יוצרים, מתנדבים וגופים תומכים. העלות של הפרויקט היא עצומה, ועם זאת, אחד הדברים שאנחנו לא מוכנים להתפשר עליהם, הוא שהאירוע יהיה זמין לכל אדם, ולגמרי בחינם! זוהי הדרך היחידה שניתן להביא כזה מגוון של אנשים יחד.

הנה הסבר קטן על ההוצאות שלנו:

חלק קיבלנו מראש, חלק יתקבל רק לאחר סוף הקיץ,
וחלק ילך על מנת לקיים את מסורת באסטת האבטיחים גם לשנים הבאות
