What is it?
Brooklyn Community Supported Art + Design is a subscription service for locally produced art and design. Following the model of Community Supported Agriculture, in which shareholders invest in a local farm and receive a monthly share of fruits and vegetables, Brooklyn Community Supported Art + Design connects shareholders directly to the arts community. The Brooklyn CSA+D offers access to reasonably priced contemporary art and design works produced by regional artists and designers. Shares will be offered from artists and designers starting in the fall of 2013, offering people a new way to collect art and support local artists.
How does it work?
CSA+D Brooklyn has secured some amazing jurors to help select the participating artists and designers for the inaugural season: Charles Hively, founder of 3x3 Magazine, Kathleen Massara, arts editor at the Huffington Post, and Susan Walsh, Senior Designer at Milton Glaser Incorporated.
The application is open from June 8th to July 8th for artists and designers to submit a proposal for 50 works. Selected participants will receive a $3000 commission to create these works before September 20th, 2013.
Soon, shares will go on sale at two price points: $500 for a full share of six works, $250 for a half share of three. Shareholders will pick up their shares at two pick-ups this fall, in September and October.
Why is it unique?
The Brooklyn CSA+D is focused on a direct artist to buyer relationship. This will help to foster a connection between the aritst and collectors that might not be possible in a gallery, online art outlet, or other marketplace.
Since its inception by Springboard for the Arts in the Twin Cities in 2010, this model has gained popularity and has been replicated throughout the country. We are thankful to Springboard for the Arts, threewalls, Seed Space, and The Drop for leading the path in establishing sustainable models for community supported art programs.
How far have we come?
Since launching the website in May, we've had over 1,000 visits to the site, over close to 50 artist applications submitted in the first 2.5 weeks of the application period, and a waiting list brimming with people eager to be notified when shares are available! It's happening!
How can you help?
Your vital support will help get us through the finish line, helping to cover website, marketing and promotional expenses as well as juror fees and the necessary materials for delivery. We have volunteered our time so far to set up the structure for this new marketplace, and with your help, we'll have the chance to get on firm financial footing to produce future seasons for CSA+D Brooklyn.
If you haven't the means to donate, you can help us by spreading the word. Please share this on Faceboook and Twitter or email the link to this Indiegogo campaign to your friends. Like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter.
Donation Levels and Shares
Donors at the Founding Supporter ($500) and Founding Member ($1,000) levels will be giving us a huge boost. By paying double the price for the half-share and full-share (which will be $250 and $500 when shares become available), these donors are guaranteeing their spot in this first season, and helping to guarantee that this project succeeds for seasons to come through their generous support. Thank you!
