Canoe: Icon of the North is a film that will inspire viewers through the story told by legends of North America’s paddling community, portraying the many important ways the canoe has and continues to shape our culture and heritage.

Promoting canoe culture through this film comes at an important time as wilderness canoe tripping is on the decline.  Day and weekend outings close to access roads are taking the place of extended canoe trips that reach farther into our world famous natural landscapes.  Accordingly, there are fewer people exploring these areas, fewer people passing on this story to the next generation and perhaps most worrisome, fewer people who are experiencing these natural areas and returning home aware of the critical importance of protecting these natural areas.

We will tell the story of canoe culture in North America, the important role the canoe has played in our history, and the promise the canoe holds for continuing to connect people to our world famous wilderness and waterways.

Key Contributor Biographies

In addition to the knowledge and expertise brought to the film by our Producer Jason Eke (who has been building canoes for over a decade and has paddled in waters across North America and around the world), we have confirmed interviews with leading paddling experts, authorities of canoe culture, these include authors, artists, athletes and historians, people like:

Kevin Callan

Kevin Callan is the author of thirteen books, including the best selling “The Happy Camper”, and most reviewed “Wilderness Pleasures: A Practical Guide to Camping Bliss,” he is also a winner of four National Magazine Awards and three film awards. On a regular basis, he presents across North America and has been a key speaker at all the major canoe events for over 25 years.

"I believe it’s imperative to not only promote the importance of canoe culture but to also continue to gather enthusiasm for wilderness canoe tripping. Simply put, if we get people out paddling in wilderness areas they will create a connection to the natural world and have a desire to protect it when it needs protecting. A project such as this will do just that - promote canoe culture and retain interest in wilderness travel. I fully support such an endeavor." - Kevin Callan

Becky Mason

Becky Mason acquired her paddling skills and her love for canoes from her Dad, Bill Mason, the Canadian canoeing legend, author and filmmaker of the Path of the Paddle series. Becky continues the family tradition by sharing her love of paddling by teaching Classic Solo Canoe Courses and through her instructional canoeing DVDs.

"I think a film like this will help to inspire and engage new Canadians and our youth to get involved in paddle sports. As a certified Paddle Canada Instructor-Trainer and full-time canoeing instructor I see the power of the canoe as a national symbol and have seen first-hand how paddling can open up brand new vistas to all paddlers." - Becky Mason

Ted Moores

For more than 40 years Ted Moores has worked to produce wooden watercraft that combine classic lines with the most advanced marine technologies. In the early 1970’s he pioneered a method of canoe building which combined traditional techniques with modern technology. Ted’s success as an author includes several books on boat construction, including Kayakcraft, Kayaks You can Build, and Canoecraft: a guide to fine woodstrip canoe construction, which has sold more than 300,000 copies.

We'll also be meeting up with

John Jennings

The Impact

In addition to the fantastic support we're receiving to produce this film from our sponsors, we've also partnered with the Canadian Canoe Foundation, a charitable organization that develops watershed-focused environmental education projects and sends Canadian youth on canoe-trip learning adventures. CCF objectives are to educate communities about sustainability and to provide youth with a ‘hands-on’ education regarding Canada’s natural heritage and the importance of protecting our wilderness areas and waterways. The CCF believe's (and so do we) that canoe trips provide a trans-formative environmental education that cannot be achieved in the classroom.

It's environmental education that inspires many people to become passionate about protecting their local waters and the canoe is the perfect educational vehicle.

We hope that through this film we will inspire people to get outdoors, be active, value the canoe as an important part of our culture and heritage, and explore.

What People Are Saying

"At the Canadian Canoe Museum we're looking for new and fresh ways to bring the canoe alive and make its teachings relevant and the film Canoe: Icon of the North may be just the thing. Suddenly, you've got a vehicle and a path to explore ideas that might just shake comfortable complacent Canadians out of our torpor of privilege and help us on our way. It would be very cool to use the journey as a passage into enlightenment which could, in the end, affirm old truths or truisms or establish new ways to interpret, understand and appreciate the canoe as an icon of the north." - James Raffan, The Canadian Canoe Museum

"The canoe has a great historical significance in Canada and we are very proud of the international success Canada has had in the sport. We are interested in your film, Canoe: Icon of the North and with our mutual interest in canoeing, we are pleased to support it however we can." - Ian Miller, CanoeKayak Canada
