THE BOOK
This book of photographs celebrates the contributions of Chinese and Chinese Americans to the film and television industries - as well as those who lived and worked in the Hollywood area. The time period spans the silent film era to the present.
The authors are Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC) and board member Jenny Cho. Founded in 1975, the mission of CHSSC is to preserve and promote the history of Chinese Americans to a wide audience. The publisher is Arcadia Publishing.
WHAT WE NEED
We have supported ourselves through the first two years of writing this book and now we need $3000 to make it to the home stretch. CHSSC is a 501c(3) non-profit run entirely on donations.
To raise funds, we are taking pre-orders for the book, which will be released around Christmas 2013, and pairing them with various perks.
Why Chinese in Hollywood?
I'm Jenny Cho, author and board member of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. I've been researching Chinese American history for ten years.
I wrote this book for future generations so they could learn about pioneers such as director Marion Wong, who made the first Chinese American silent film in 1916 - as well as the transcendent Anna May Wong and her peers, Keye Luke, Benson Fong, Victor Senyoung, and more. Photos document the first Asian American musical - Flower Drum Song - and its superstar Nancy Kwan.
This is my third and final book in a photographic series about Chinese Americans. The first two are available on Amazon.com here: http://tinyurl.com/chinatownla
