The Story

Phare Ponleu Selpak (pronounced "far ponloo selepack") or Phare ("far") for short, is a very special school in Battambang, Cambodia. It is the setting of an amazing fairy tale-like story that I am bringing to the big screen as a feature length documentary film.

Phare has a regular education curriculum for more than a thousand students, many who come from extreme poverty. The school also provides a dynamic arts program where students can develop into wonderfully expressive artists, musicians, dancers, actors and circus stars. That's right, circus stars.

This film is about Phare's special circus school program in Cambodia and two extraordinary students from the program who have a chance to hit the big time.

The main practice facility at Phare Ponleu Selpak

Current students and graduates in Phare's circus school perform several times each week for hundreds of foreign travelers and locals inside the school's circus tent. The students have developed amazing abilities and have travelled overseas to perform. Thanks to their training, they can earn a decent living from doing what they love.

If it wasn't for Phare, many of these students would likely be sweating it out in a factory for just a few dollars a day, or maybe worse. There is little opportunity for the village youth of Cambodia and some turn to drugs, crime or prostitution. The aim of this film is to show that with the right intention, dedication and positive energy, anything is possible – even in a place like Cambodia, which has faced extreme hardship in the recent past.

This feature-length film will detail the school's magical story and how it offers its students an extraordinary chance to become shining stars.

Phare Ponleu Selpak's back story

The film will also explore Phare's history as well. The school was founded in 1994 by a group of young Cambodians who originally met as children in a refugee camp in Thailand during the 1970s and 80s. They were in a camp in order to escape the guerrilla civil war raging in Cambodia following the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge reign of terror.

In the camp’s harsh conditions, a dedicated French volunteer mentored Phare's co-founders, who taught them how to paint and draw and express themselves creatively.

The young friends vowed that one day they would start an arts school in the town of Battambang, a creative hub for traditional arts and culture before the Khmer Rouge regime, which targeted and killed artists and intellectuals specifically in this region after seizing power in 1975.

Today, Phare is making a profound difference in this community, especially for the most vulnerable. Besides providing education and training, the school has revitalized the arts scene back in the community.

I have the school's support on this documentary film and full access has been granted to be with the students and their families in order to learn about their lives.

Dreams of Cirque du Soleil

Sopha Nem and Dina Sok are two phenomenal teenage circus students from Phare. With great administrative assistance from Phare, they were accepted into the prestigious National Circus School of Montreal in 2011, where they are training now. Sopha and Dina have adjusted to a completely different foreign environment, they've learned French, and they are excelling in the school's advanced circus program. Their lives and progress will be featured extensively in the film, and the viewers of the film will get to know their families back in Battambang.

Sopha and Dina in Montreal

Sopha and Dina dream of performing with Cirque du Soleil, also based in Montreal, and Cirque du Soleil is a major donor to the National Circus School of Montreal. Many graduates of the National Circus School of Montreal go on to work with Cirque du Soleil and other top tier circus companies around the world, and if Sopha and Dina eventually manage to land a job with Cirque de Soleil, or another big circus, it will undoubtedly have a massive impact on their families and community back home.

I have also taken lots of footage of Sopha and Dina in Montreal to explore their personalities and their experiences. The film will follow Sopha and Dina's lives as their careers take off.

Inspirational Impact

This is a story about a dream and vision inspired by art, creativity and passion. This film will show how the human spirit with the right determination and passion can blossom even in very difficult social conditions.

My goal is to reach a wide audience with this film so people can better understand how important arts and creativity are for education and for making a difference in our lives.

Overall scope of film

I intend to make a visually stunning, feature-length documentary that showcases the lush colors of the raw Cambodian countryside and and the tremendous spirit and energy found at
Phare. It is a story of how the human spirit can triumph over poverty, conflict and adversity

The film will explore a brief history of the school including some background on Cambodia and its cultural and artistic traditions. It will convey how Phare is helping local at-risk youth to move beyond Cambodia's tragic past and show the hopeful possibilities for the future with Sopha and Dina as examples.

The film will also examine the impact that Phare has on the students, specifically Sopha and Dina and their families, as well as the local community and throughout Cambodia. The film will also expose the viewer to the challenges and triumphs that these young performers face.

What I Need & What You Get

I'm asking for $25,000, and I'll stretch it as far as I can, but realistically, I could use much more for this project, so feel free to be generous :)

I need:

  • Post-production assistance
  • Help from fixers and translators
  • Extra camera person for some shoots
  • Funds for future travel to Battambang
  • Funds for future shoots in Canada to follow Sopha and Dina's careers in Montreal. I went in May 2012 and returned in May 2013 to get more footage. I need additional funds to follow them or to hire a cameraperson to follow them during future key events in Canada.

Thus far, I shot and edited almost the entire trailer myself and and it's been self-funded, although I've had a lot of key help along the way. While it is exhilarating to essentially put this all together myself, I really need greater support and technical assistance to tell this story properly. I hope you can be a part of this.

Below is another longer trailer for the film if you want to learn more about this project and see some more circus action.

Meaningful Perks

I've tried to be creative and personal with the perks I am offering to those who donate to the film. When was the last time you got a postcard from Cambodia (or a postcard at all?). How many of you have a Cambodian scarf (krama)? Or a photo printed on eco-friendly bamboo paper? Major contributors can even become an executive producer or go on a trip to Cambodia!

About me

My name is Joel Gershon and I am a New York native, and I've been based in Bangkok for the past eight years as a freelance writer, documentary filmmaker and university lecturer. You can see some of my previous work on my website: joelgershon.com.

I found out about Phare while traveling in Cambodia. After seeing a circus performance and learning the school's history, I knew I wanted to tell this incredible story. It's been two years since I first learned about it and I am well on my way to making this film happen.

Creating this film has been a journey and I hope you can join me by making a contribution and/or endorsing my effort by spreading word of this campaign to people you think will appreciate it.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you wish to help me make this film in other ways, I welcome suggestions. I also hope you please repost this, share this, Like this, Tweet this, and tell anyone who might be interested in possibly funding this or helping me in some way.

And please also check out: Phare Ponleu Selpak's official website as well as Sopha and Dina's personal crowdfunding page that Phare has put together in order for this dynamic duo to maintain enough funds to help them while they are in Montreal. That is separate from the film I'm making.
