"Comedy of Sorrows" by Ibrahim El-Husseini
August 21-25 as part of the HERE Summer Sublet Series.
“Comedy of Sorrows” follows a young university-educated Egyptian woman through a series of encounters with different members of society and comes to realize that she had been oblivious to the poverty and misery of her fellow Egyptians. The play is an presents a collective and unsentimental account of a nation’s awakening. Through a unique combination of vivid poetry and colloquial dialogue, it celebrates the uprising of a people, while at the same time anticipating the uncertainty and tumult of a nation struggling to transition to democracy. While written about Egypt, the universality of the struggle to overcome oppression is accessible to all audiences.
As Egypt goes through historic transitions, we here in New York are working to bring the voices of the Egyptian people, and their universal struggle for freedom and democracy to U.S. audiences this August.
"Comedy of Sorrows" was written in direct response to the Egyptian revolution in 2011, and while it celebrates the uprising of a people, at the same time it anticipates the uncertainty and tumult of a nation struggling to transition to democracy.
As an Egyptian-American artist, this play has struck me on a deeply personal level. Voices of artists in Egypt are being silenced. We want them to be heard.
We believe that now is the time to bring this relevant play to U.S. audiences.
However, we need your support to bring these voices to the stage. Your donation will go directly to supporting the diverse group of artists, the playwright, and the translators bringing this story to life. We need your help to fully realize the playwright’s vision and allow the voices of the Egyptian people to be spoken. Please donate. Please share this message. Please help make known the struggles of the Egyptian people in anyway you can.
