Conserve, Maintain and Restore Pompeii
Pompeii is regarded as one of the most oldest archaeological sites in the world. Having been buried for over 1,500 years, the site has a plethora of history and a cove of artifacts. Pompeii is widely known to be associated with the notorious Mount Vesuvius, which attracts more the 2 million visitors every year.
Pompeii holds some of the world's best preserved ancient Roman murals and mosaics that are still vivid in color as they were in 79 A.D. These mosaics and murals contain a glimpse of life into the Roman culture and lifestyle as it was in the vibrant Pompeii more than 2000 years ago. The eruption of Vesuvius also spared many of the grand villas and Roman architecture that Pompeii was so proud of.
However now that Pompeii has been exposed to the elements and high tourist traffic, Pompeii is slowly falling apart and priceless murals, art, and artifacts are also being destroyed which can never be recovered.
Currently, the Italian state is implementing the Great Pompeii Project which aims to enhance the effectiveness of the actions and interventions for protecting the archaeological area of Pompeii by developing a special urgent programme of conservation, maintenance, and restoration. However, the response is slow and the site is losing valuable time. The program is costly and without other support, aside from the 10+ small archaeological groups from other schools around the world, Pompeii could loose many, if not all of it's precious murals and irreplaceable buildings.

Recently in 2010, one of the most important buildings in Pompeii, The Schola Armaturarum - also known as the House of the Gladiators, collapsed due to strong rains and other elements. According to the Current World Archaeology magazine, funding cuts were blamed and due to the lack of conservation.

More disturbing is that just two months ago in December, walls collapsed in the main street of Pompeii due to the heavy rains with no attempt of any conservation. At this rate, most of Pompeii will disappear if groups do not start raising attention to get this beautiful site maintained. Apparently, a new funding project has been proposed but these allegations have been going on for years, where not much has been done. Pompeii is full of precious murals and mosaics, pottery and irreplaceable personal artifacts that need to be saved and photographed before they are completely gone. This is why myself, and a group of fellow individuals from Edinboro University of PA have decided to raise awareness to the current state of Pompeii in hopes to raise money and donate to the Great Pompeii Project to show that people are committed to saving this precious gem. With a donation to the project, we hope that it will push the state to continue the process of funding to conserve Pompeii and it's history.
A percentage of the raised money, along with our own contributions, will go towards documenting, photographing and creating a professional photo journal of all the vivid irreplaceable murals, mosaics and "frozen in time" roman lifestyle objects for people around the world to see. A select group of Edinboro Students, majors and graduates in Classic and Art History, Geography and Graphic Design will travel to Pompeii for a month during the summer to photograph, document, and create a photo journal to preserve the great Roman achievements in art and lifestyle that Pompeii currently holds. We will be requesting for the help of an Art History and History Professor from the school to attend the project with us to provide valuable guidance while in Pompeii. This will provide high accuracy of the photo journal.

What We Need Help With & What You Get In Return
This is not a simple task to achieve without a great deal of help and effort. This is why we are asking for a small donation to help us achieve or goal to contributing to Pompeii in hopes to promote more help to saving this great city. Along with the donation to the Great Pomepii Project, we want to photograph and archive the city's most precious pieces in a professional photo journal made by our talented Graphic Design students here at Edinboro University and allow the journal to be used as a reminder of the priceless history and art of Pompeii.
Our breakdown is as follows for this project:
- We want to donate at least $40,000 to the Pompeii Project as a sign of our love and dedication to conserving Pompeii.
- Cost of printing the journals at $10,000-$10,500 on quality paper. The design of the photo journals will be of a unique design to honor Pompeii's artistic style.
- $10,000 being split for housing and food while in Pompeii for 6 of us. We have budgeted our own contributions to be $2,500 each for the trip.
- We are also hosting on-campus activities to raise money for donating to the Great Pompeii Project.
- We will be selling the photo journal on our website for $10.00 after the project is completed.

Your help can improve the state and well being for Pompeii's future. We are confident that our donation and photo journal will help Pompeii's future by influencing others to save the future of Pompeii.

This will be done by continuous fundraising such as activities and student events.
Please help us reach our goal. You Help will definitely be rewarding!
