Hello, Music Fans!
Bay Area blackened prog/trad metal band Cormorant is recording their third full-length album in September 2013. This fundraiser is intended to help ease the financial difficulty of creating the album as we have always done: 100% independently. All the funding will go toward tracking, mixing, mastering, awesome artwork and cool merchandise.
For the past two years, we've been working through many of life's interesting twists and turns in an attempt to continue pushing our skills and crafting a sound that challenges and intrigues the listener from beginning to end. Almost immediately after the last touches were put on our second full-length (2011's "Dwellings"), we began to feel a natural evolution that pulled each of us in our own individual ways. Not long after returning from two successful U.S. tours in 2012, we were presented with a unique situation that required us to push ahead as a three-piece. Ideas began to flow, riffs came together and our songs grew, but we soon realized that we needed a fourth member to complete the balance. That's when we came across Marcus Luscombe. An Australian-born San Francisco Bay Area native, Marcus has been active in the metal scene since 1999 as lead guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist for Vengince (Ivory Tower/Cargo Records) and lead singer, lyricist and guitarist for Cloakwheel (Nightmare Records). His unique stylings and weird, proggy bass lines have added new elements to the Cormorant sound, and we can't wait for you to hear how he sounds on the album!
This upcoming album is the culmination of all our lessons learned over the past two years—all the adapting, learning, compromise and growth. We started out with a goal in mind, and watching it grow and develop is a truly beautiful thing. So, even though it sounds cheesy to say, we hope that you'll be a part of the next step in the musical journey that is Cormorant. We got some post-black metal weird-shit for y'all.

The Impact
All funds will go toward supporting this third full-length. Our fans have been extremely supportive since our first EP, "The Last Tree," when we were just a 3-piece. We felt that the EP only scratched the surface of the sound we wanted to make. Enter "Metazoa." Due to the overwhelming international DIY support, for which we are truly thankful, and our own deep urges to create something more epic and all-encompassing, we wrote an released our long epic "Metazoa," recorded by producer Billy Anderson (Sleep, Primordial, Neurosis, Eyehategod) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, CA. "Dwellings" was our 2nd full-length and actually our first successful attempt at crowd funding. Each participant of $30 or more received their name printed in the album. The campaign was so successful that PayPal actually froze our account because they thought Dwellings was some hacker scam. Thank you to all who participated in that adventure—you have allowed us to follow our dreams! Now, as we embark on our third full-length recording, we again invite you to become a part of this musical journey.
TrakWorX Studio
With this album, we really want to put an all-out effort into the quality of the sound. As we did with Dwellings, we've tracked all music live to analog tape with engineer/producer Justin Weis, known for his work with Slough Feg, Agalloch, Hammers of Misfortune, Andre Nickatina, Ludicra and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. In many ways, this release is our most focused album as we have learned that every tone counts, and nothing can be skimped on sonically. www.trakworx.com/
Where does the money go?
We have made every effort to reduce the cost of this album without sacrificing the integrity and feel of the music.
The total we need to make this record is $7,500. This breaks down into the following:
- $5,000 for Studio, Engineer, Producer, Mixing and Mastering Fees
- $2,500 for Printing/Artwork/Promotion/Distribution Fees
Other Ways You Can Help?
If you can't contribute any money, don't worry about it.

Ultimately, your support is vital to the creation of album and we could not be more thankful.
