Summary
We’re a deaf percussion band from Singapore and we drum up a storm! We’re keen to share our love for music with deaf children in Cambodia. We’ve worked really hard to raise nearly two-thirds of what we need, doing everything from holding concerts to selling cookies and items designed by the deaf at flea markets.
Now we’re seeking your help with the final third.
Our group, ExtraOrdinary Horizons, is made up mostly of students and we always keen to promote awareness about the deaf community. We play all kinds of percussion instruments like drums, marimbas, bells, djembes, surdos, tambourines and xylophones.
We recently came to know about Krousar Thmey School for the Deaf in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Fourteen of us are going to visit 160 deaf kids there for four days in June.
Impact
With your help, we hope to be able to:
- Ignite a passion for music in the children at Krousar Thmey School
- Enrich their lives by exposing them to new experiences
- Empower them by teaching them life-skills that we’ve had to learn ourselves
What we need
This is how we intend to use the US$4,000 we hope to raise:
- Air tickets and other transportation for 15 of us: $1,750
- Accommodation for team for four days: $650
- Equipment, interactive materials and basic items for the 160 children, including utensils, stationery and bags: $1,600.
If you help us surpass our goal, we’ll use the extra funds to buy musical instruments for our group. (We’ve had some very kind support from friends who’ve donated equipment but we need more so more people can play, especially more portable instruments so transporting them – usually in taxis – for performances is a bit easier).
If we don’t reach our goal (we’re keeping our fingers crossed that won’t happen), the money raised will first go towards the children, then our transport, then our accommodation.
What you get
Besides the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped deaf children, you’ll get the band’s heartfelt thanks, expressed in everything from a thank you video and t-shirts to sign language lessons and a live performance of our song with our friends Black Forest.
