Our goal is to revitalise an iconic and historically significant building in Glasgow, Scotland - by developing it into a vibrant venue, bringing art, music, culture and life to a disadvantaged area of the city.
Who we are and our campaign
The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society is an independent, non-profit making charity, established in 1973 to promote the awareness of the Scottish architect, artist and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and support the preservation and protection of Mackintosh's buildings.
One of the many not-for-profit activities of the Society has been to rescue and restore his only Church, when it fell into disuse in 1976 and was no longer required by the Church of Scotland. The building was in danger of being lost and the Society stepped in to save it. With many renovations and a major restoration project the Society aims to protect and preserve this important building for future generations.
We recognise that the building, while having such historic relevance to the area through its iconic architect, is also a beautiful and unique building that can create the perfect setting for the arts.
Our campaign is designed to help us develop this stunning site and take advantage of the building's excellent natural acoustic qualities for the use of concerts, gigs, exhibitions and shows. This will not only help to keep the building alive, but also creates a new and vibrant arts centre in one of the areas of highest multiple deprivation in Glasgow.
What we need
To achieve our goal we need to raise £10,000 to put towards transforming this venue into a usable and accessible area for performing artists, musicians and events.
The money will be used in three key ways:
To create additional performance space.
Install stage lighting, to help create the right atmosphere that will enhance any type of performance, exhibition or art show.
To provide a quality grand piano that will give musicians access to use the venue as a performing space.
***This will not only help open up the building for arts use, but also give free access to local music students to use the space for rehearsals and lunchtime concerts.***
If we did not reach our goal of £10,000, we would assess the most effective way to use what money we have raised to fulfill one or two of these aspects.
All of the work that we do within the building is in consultation with Historic Scotland and conservation specialists.
