Don't Call Me Crazy is a documentary presenting numerous perspectives on depression, bipolar, and other affective disorders in the United States. From personal stories to the latest medical research and therapy options, learn about the difficult realities of living with affective disorders and how making art can empower those afflicted to express themselves, foster understanding, and join society rather than be alienated from it. We are adding to a community of support networks that bring awareness, understanding, and aid to people with mental illness and their families. Please join 3 And One Half Films as they explore the difficulty, confusion, and extraordinary potential of living life on the affective spectrum.
What’s The Affective Spectrum?
- More commonly known as mood disorders, the affective spectrum includes depression, bipolar, obsessive compulsive, attention deficit, and a host of other psychological and behavioral disorders.
- Approximately 20.9 million Americans aged 18 and older are living with one or more affective disorder, and bipolar disorder specifically accounts for more than a quarter of those affected. (National Institute of Mental Health)
- An equal number of men and women develop bipolar illness and it is found in all ages, races, ethnic groups and social classes. (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance)
- Bipolar disorder results in 9.2 years reduction in expected life span, and as many as one in five patients with bipolar disorder completes suicide. (NIMH)
- The World Health Organization lists bipolar disorder as the sixth leading cause of disability in the world. (NIMH)
About The Film
Numerous studies have demonstrated a relationship between creative professions and mental illness. Our documentary follows director and 3 And One Half Films founder Zach Singer, whose experience with bipolar disorder has brought both energy and inspiration to his filmmaking and destruction to his personal life. His story brings a microscope to the devastating effects of mood disorders on families, professional success, and relationships, while highlighting the support networks—including friends, mentors, and art making—that have allowed Zach to continue working, fighting, and thriving.
Footage from Zach’s life is only one part of the story. We are fortunate to have actor Nick Gomez (of Looper, The Walking Dead, and Dexter) on board to play the doctor in a series of scenes explaining affective disorders while simultaneously demonstrating their effects. Nick's scenes will lend context to interviews with other artmakers who have struggled with affective disorders and found ways to keep creating, keep living. Nick has already started delving into the complex content of living with mental disease in 3 And One Half’s short film Lily, adapted by Zach from a Tennessee William's play and available on Vimeo.
Finally, the documentary will include interviews with a variety of people and allied organizations including other artists, nonprofits and research institutions, medical professionals and psychologists, in order to shed light on the causes, treatments, and misconceptions about affective disorders and attempt to understand the issue as fully as possible. We have already begun contacting many of our allies about getting involved and are proud to say that Susan G. Berk, herself a diagnosed bipolar and arts advocate, is signed on.
Life with mental illness is not easy, but we are all capable of overcoming its hurdles. We believe that telling these stories—our stories—will help more people live with and understand mental disease.

What We Need & What You Get
The research and outreach phase of our project is almost complete and it’s time to start making the movie! Our immediate goals are clear:
We Need:
- Studio and production equipment so we can start the shoot and record the soudtrack.
- Funds to pay Nick’s SAG fees for his shoot.
- Funds to cover travel for our interviewees or us to get to and from our shooting locations in: AZ, CA, MA, NY, and PA.
There are more costs to come, from travel to sets, post production, festival fees, and much, much more, so any funding we receive over our shorterm goal will go towards finishing the documentary and getting it out there for people to see!
You Get:
- For just $1, you get a digital download of the soundtrack's first accoustic single, Jumper!
- We have the movie, its soundtrack, a limited edition poster for Indiegogo contributors, film credits tickets to the documentary's world premiere, screenings, and GREAT parties for our perks. We've tried to include something for everyone - take a look to the right and see what suits you!
- Regardless of whether you can contribute financially to Don't Call Me Crazy, everyone is invited to follow our production blog to stay updated on the film!
We know this project is important to a lot of people, and we want to show that we appreciate every single contribution - that's why we're sharing our stories, making special items just for our first funders (you!), and why every single contributor gets a perk if they want it. We know not everyone can afford to give all they want, but every little bit helps us gain momentum and potentially be featured on this site and others. If you decide to give more later, you can always upgrade to get more perks! Just message us and we'll work out a great package.
