BETWEEN WOOD AND WATER documents the restoration of Dorothy, Canada's oldest still-sailing vessel, and the devotion of those fighting to see her race again!
This is the true story of a heartbreaker of a sailboat who has inspired loyalty and devotion for over a century: Dorothy. Since she first slipped into the waters of Victoria's inner harbour in 1897, Dorothy has smitten men and women with her sensuous lines and perfect handling for 116 years. Experiencing dramatic swings of care and neglect over her life, some ordinary hero, decade after decade, strives to bring her back to peak sailing condition. Today, Dorothy has somehow survived to be Canada's oldest functioning sailboat, and is about to be restored to glory - to race again in 2014!
We are mid-production for an hour-long film titled "Between Wood and Water", tracing Dorothy's early history on the west coast to present day, though her contemporary restoration by shipwright and artist Tony Grove. The film's estimated release is February 2015.
Watch the trailer here:
Produced by Tobi Elliott (field coordinator, Watchers of the North), with D.O.P. Kate Bradford (senior production editor, CBC - "Adrienne Clarkson Presents") this beautiful maritime love story set against a backdrop of Pacific west coast history will be an exciting account of contemporary restoration and today's rich wooden boat culture.
The Maritime Museum of BC, who owns the Dorothy and is undertaking her restoration, has granted us incredible access to the rich archival history surrounding this vessel. We even have access to logbooks from her original owner W.H. Langley dating back to 1902!
Broadcasters have told us they want the story, but we must first prove there's an audience. We know from talking with YOU – everyone from die-hard wooden boat fans to the everyday romantic at your local coffee shop – that there IS an audience.
What We Need & What You Get
We need at least $10,000 to continue shooting Dorothy's restoration this fall and winter. This is only about 10% of the overall budget - much more will be needed in 2014 as we get into editing, and then colour correction and post-production. But for now, we are asking for $10,000 to be able to continue filming the important stages of Dorothy's restoration this winter.
$10,000 allows us to:
pay our crew, who are already giving us fantastic rates
shoot Dorothy's restoration in Tony's shop
buy a second hard drive to back up all footage
cut a "sizzle reel" or pitch video to sell the story to potential funders and distributors

For your contribution to this fundraiser, you'll get rewards exclusive to this campaign:

bragging rights for being a vital part of the production of a beautiful documentary

privileged access to a period in history we will never see again: the restoration of this 116 year old vessel!
The Impact
Your contribution will enable us to keep filming. We have been working independently on this project for a year, out of our own pockets, and we must open it to a wider community in order to continue. Your support will ensure that Dorothy's story gets the professional treatment it deserves in the film "Between Wood and Water".
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you can't give a dime, we really appreciate your support. We can't wait for this beautiful little yacht to take her place in history. With your help, we can tell her story. Every shout out helps!

Why do films cost so much?
Well, the short answer is that there are just no shortcuts to excellence. We want to give Dorothy, and this maritime love story, the best, most well-produced treatment possible.
Making a good film is like building a house, or a boat! You need great materials, you need a good crew who know what they are doing, and you need to pay those people to create a masterful product. We don't want this film to look like someone's "home video" and sit on shelves or languish on the backend of a distributor's must-sell list.
Dorothy is a worthy boat, a beautiful subject, and worth putting the money and time into giving her a compellingvisual storythat isprofessionally shot and beautifully rendered. She deserves no less.
