What's Dyke Central?
Dyke Central is an Oakland-based dramedy that centers around 30-something butch roommates Alex and Gin. The first season sees Alex attempting to sustain her dysfunctional relationship with girlfriend Jackie, in the face of new life options and the resurfacing of an old flame. Gin, on the other hand, is a chameleon whose identity changes with every new interest and tends to lose herself in others. Surrounded by a diverse group of friends who guide, challenge and support them, Alex and Gin struggle to adapt to change and create balance in their lives without losing themselves.
What's the story behind it?
Dyke Central was born out of a strong desire to see a true representation of the diverse and vibrant Bay Area queer life, shared by creators Florencia Manovil and Arnetta Smith. The pilot episode for the series was shot in May 2011 and then screened at Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre in October of the same year. The audience of more than 500 people gave it a standing ovation and demanded more. The pilot was also well received at 2012 film festival screenings in San Francisco (QWOCFF, Frameline) and LA (Outfest, International TV Fest).
Aside from heavy marketing and promotion work during the 2012 festival run, we finished developing all of Season 1, underwent some team changes, restructured the writing process, and completed scripts for new Season 1 episodes.

Why do we need this money?
It costs around $10,000 to shoot each 22-minute episode. With these $20,000 (plus $1000 for fundraising/administrative fees), we will shoot episodes 2 and 3.
However, if we raise $28,000, we can shoot episode 4 as well! With $36,000 we can shoot up to episode 5, and with $44,000, we can shoot episode 6 too - getting halfway through season 1. That's 110 more minutes of juicy content!
If, on the other hand, we don't raise the full amount, we will shoot at least one episode (Ep 2), and do more independent fundraising over the summer to finish raising funds for Episode 3.

We are committed to bringing this series to life because we know that the LGBTQ community is thirsty for media that represents the diversity of its people and lives. We also hunger for more diversity in television and film and believe that it's key to have more media created by women and people of color.
