Our mission is to end sexual violence. As Slut Walk organizers, we are trying to make a positive difference through our actions. We are in our third year of an initiative to bring awareness to victim-blaming and other troubles that happen to rape survivors.
Today 1 in 5 people still think women are asking for sexual assault.People ignore the reality that men face sexual violence too and are often not belived due to the social narrative that men want sex all the time.
Historically, the term ‘slut’ has carried a predominantly negative connotation. Aimed at those who are sexually promiscuous, be it for work or pleasure, it has primarily been women who have suffered under the burden of this label. And whether dished out as a serious indictment of one’s character or merely as a flippant insult, the intent behind the word is always to wound. We’re not standing for that anymore.
This year, around the world we have been presented with the tragedy that sexual assault causes to women, to men, and to families. Jane Doe in Stuebenville was brave enough to face her rapists and assisted by the online activists Anonymous. Rehteah Parsons was not so lucky she was victimized and
then re-victimized by use of social media and forced to relive her trauma as well as being called a slut for being raped.
There’s nothing a person can ever do to deserve sexual violence.
In order to complete this project we need:
* Monetary donations to cover permits/insurance printing costs
* Money going towards signage and SWAG
We would be most grateful if you could donate to help us implement our project. If you are interested we will keep you informed with regular updates. We look forward to working together for a world free of sexual violence, and a safer, stronger community.
Reality Check
Slut Walks have faced ciritcism in regards to the inclusiveness of the event and the privilage. We are listening, reading and having conversations about inclusiveness. We have reached out to the LGBT community, and the indigenous communities and hope to form connections with these groups.
Every city that does Slut Walk has a different reality. In Edmonton we are proud to have members of the Trans* community walk with us, as well as mae rape survivors as these two groups tend to be marginalized in conversations around sexual assault.
In issues of employment or sexual preference we welcome everyone and wish to spread the awareness that no one, NO ONE, deserves sexual violence.
