We are beyond thrilled to have reached our original goal of $25,000. We are pleased to announce a potential new project as a stretch goal.
If we raise another $10,000 during this campaign we will generate a report detailing radiation release rates at all 100 currently operating nuclear power plants in the United State. This report would be available to the public for free and allow anyone living in the U.S. access to release rates about the plants they or their loved ones live in proximity to. In order to produce such a report Fairewinds Energy Education would need to hire a researcher to analyze both annual reports for each of the 100 plants during the last ten years (2,000 reports). We would then aggregate the research into one accessible document for the public.
Fairewinds Energy Education is a 501(c)3 non-profit that creates educational materials to inform the public about nuclear power operations, engineering flaws, and safety risks. Maggie Gundersen founded Fairewinds after she and Arnie Gundersen stopped working for the nuclear power industry, Maggie as a public information specialist and executive recruiter and Arnie as a nuclear engineer and senior vice president. They are dedicating their lives to making sure that they leave a safer, healthier planet for their children and grandchildren.
The money we raise with this campaign will allow us to continue reporting on the true cost of nuclear power in 2014. With your help, we will produce a weekly podcast, one film per month, technical reports, and information on the nuclear power plants in your backyards. These funds are critical to our ability to respond to current events as well as to share ongoing nuclear and energy news as it unfolds. Our tireless research and media development have already had a significant impact, and with your help we will continue to work to prevent another disaster.
Return on Your Investment
This year, in partnership with Friends of the Earth, we helped convince Southern California Edison to abandon hopes of restarting the damaged San Onofre nuclear power generating station. With your assistance, we will continue to take utilities and government regulators to task and force them to responsibly address nuclear safety risks. Our work on the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi is helping millions of people understand the radiological consequences we face as a result of these triple meltdowns. Our films, technical reports, and podcasts will continue to address this seemingly endless disaster.
Our work educating the public about nuclear power is vital, because the stakes are terrifyingly high. The consequences of a poorly regulated nuclear industry are real, and we are up against industry titans. Our health, environment, and children’s futures are at risk.
