Short Summary
Justina was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease by a specialist at Tufts Medical Center. Here specialist was moved Boston Children's Hospital. So when Justina came down with the flu, she needed to go see her specialist at this different hospital. While she was there, a neurologist stepped in and claimed that Justina in fact did not have Mitochondrial Disease, she has Somataform Disorder -- in other words...it's all in your head. Quickly the hospital accused the parents of medical child abuse, brought in DCF, who took the family to court and took custody of Justina away from the parents.
Now, a year later, still fighting for custody and proper treatment of their daughter, Justina is wheelchair bound, paralyzed below the waist and unable to move her upper body and also has a receding hairline. After a year, Boston Children's Hospital is STILL saying this is all in her head -- Mitochondrial Disease isn't real; despite having their own full-fledged Mitochondrial Disease program for diagnosis and treatment. The parents are only allowed to see her for one hour every week and aren't allowed to bring her gifts or cards. For a lack of better words, Justina is in prison. And not just Justina either...there are DOZENS of other cases just like hers in this same hospital. It's our goal to make a different and help fight this when we can. First, we start with aiding the family.
What We Need & What You Get
We've set the goal to $5,000, and at this stage almost hit that goal. This fundraiser was setup before any knowledge of the family's paypal account (which is www.freejustina.org). Full account access and campaign access has been given to the family for these funds -- the funds are theirs, always were, and always will be. What would you 'personally' get out of this, I'd say a sense of accomplishment, knowledge knowing that you've made your footprint in the sand of stopping hospitals like BCH from kidnapping our children. We really don't have anything to offer anyone here. All of these proceeds are going STRAIGHT to the family.
The Impact
The biggest impact you'll make by donating is to help the family with their financial battles. They are BROKE from legal battles to save their child. This fundraiser goes directly to the Pelletier family for explicitly that purpose. While $5,000 isn't a whole lot, it's a small impact that you can make, and hopefully tip the cup to win this long drawn-out battle.
