The San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
The Asylum of the Tortured Heart, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit. We are part of a worldwide leading-edge order of 21st century nuns. We are straight, gay, lesbian, bi, and transgendered men and women of all beliefs (including lack of beliefs) who do what nuns have done for centuries, serve our communities. Since our first appearance in the streets of San Francisco in 1979 we have devoted ourselves to community service by injecting gaeity into serious issues to promote human rights, respect diversity, enrich lives, and outreach to those on the edges. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty.
Bikes del Pueblo
As San Diego’s only collective bicycle kitchen, BdP works to empower local communities by providing workshops in a non-threatening and inclusive environment for people to learn, diagnose, and repair their bicycles. They are a not for profit and non-hierarchical volunteer cooperative dedicated to contributing to the many communities in the San Diego area. The tools and expertise of the volunteers are completely free. BdP’s vision is that everyone has access to affordable sustainable bicycling opportunities and embrace bicycling as healthy practical transportation. The video above is sample of what Bikes del Pueblo has done for the community in the past and mirroring what we will be accomplishing with your contribution:
Together ...
We will join forces to hold bicycle drives to collect donated and abandoned bicycles. We will host bike build parties to repair and refurbish the bikes given to us so that we can return them to the International Rescue Committee benefitting new refugees from war-torn countries settling in America and in need of transportation to enable their growth and enrich their lives.
What We Need & What You Get
- We have set our initial goal for $2,000 but the more the merrier!
- All the work will be done for free by volunteers but we need ongoing storage space and a workshop equipped with repair stands, tools, parts, and supplies to make this project a success.
- We will host a Poker Ride starting at the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park on August 25th at 11AM with lots of great prizes and giveaways. Using the general rules of Poker, whoever collects the best poker hand will have the first pick of the prizes, second best hand the second pick, and so on until we have exhausted all the donated goods. Ties will be determined by good ole rock-paper-scissors!
- If we don’t reach our entire goal, any money raised will go towards making our mutual work in this project a success.

Our Impact
- You will help families in need and individuals without transportation. Help them find a job, Get them to and from work and allow young adults to get to and from school.

In the video above Bike del Pueblo’s track record of empowering growth and opportunity is evident.
