Dear Friends and Fans of Poetry,

Since inception, Spooky Girlfriend Press has published, almost exclusively, chapbooks by women. Women from a variety of stations in life whose poetics and work are more varied than the typical Norton anthology would suggest. We believe that women continue to be underrepresented in the world of poetry and our primary goal is to fight against this condition and attempt, in our own way, to make a dent in this situation. We have learned a lot along the way from friends and our publishing operation has improved little by little over time up to the current day. Today, we are ready to publish our first book!

But we need your help.

For our tiny two-person operation, publishing a book is a very different animal from a chapbook and we want to be sure to do the book justice. The book we want to publish is by Nicole Steinberg, a poet we’ve been excited about and loved for years. The book, Getting Lucky, is a collection of sonnets culled from the editorial copy of Lucky, a newsstand publication about shopping and style. By adopting the magazine's gendered and glossy language, Nicole's poems explore contemporary ideals of beauty and femininity, as well as female-specific narratives we see in media, culture, and everyday life. We are hoping to reach a goal of $1,500, all of which will be used for design, production, and marketing, and poured into this book that we love and think you will love, too. Plus, the more we raise, the more we can do! Nicole is in the early stages of planning readings this fall to spread Getting Lucky far and wide, and additional support will help make to make this happen!

Nicole has been working on this collection since 2009. Poems from Getting Lucky have appeared in the following journals and publications:

At-Large, BOMB, H_NGM_N, The Inquisitive Eater, Lyre Lyre, Moonshot, No Tell Motel, Oxford Magazine, Pax Americana, The Portable Boog Reader, Wheelhouse, and more

"Steinberg’s re-appropriated text functions as a telling commentary on modern American society and the gendered molds it imposes on women and girls. The counterculture revolution urged from within the controlled, sonnet form gives tongue-in-cheek nods to the norm while flipping the bird with glittery fingernails."
—Sivan Butler-Rotholz on Getting Lucky

Stretch Goal

As of July 17, we officially met our initial goal of $1,500, and we can guarantee that Getting Lucky will be published, along with a fantastic cover design by artist Carrie Gabella. If we go over that goal, we can do even more to promote Nicole’s book. And the more we raise, the more we can do!

Our first stretch goal is $2,500. Your contributions will go towards:

  • Enhanced interior design of Getting Lucky
  • The cost of printing additional books
  • A larger marketing campaign, so these poems can reach a wider audience
  • Funding for a fall 2013 book tour along the East Coast, currently in the early planning stages
  • Support for other readings and appearances in 2014, including the Associated Writers and Writing Programs Conference (AWP) in Seattle and elsewhere

Wanna get lucky?

Please take a look at the very cool book trailer above, shot and edited by Tony Borzotta, and browse the variety of options to help make this book a reality. Everyone who contributes gets a free copy of the finished book! If you can't contribute, please help us get the word out about this campaign via Facebook, Twitter, your blog/website, email, or elsewhere, using Indiegogo's helpful sharing tools above.

We thank you so much for your time and consideration and hope that you will help us in making Nicole’s book a reality.

Spookily,
Nate and Laura
