Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - it's an often heard mantra. We're getting better at recycling, but why are we still so rubbish about reuse?
It's just too hard. For most people, their first experience of reuse is wading through umpteen different websites only to find information which is out of date or doesn't say what they need to know (e.g. that their local charity shop doesn't take TVs any more). So they give up, and throw it away. Wouldn't you?
We wouldn't. It doesn't have to be that hard. Using our Give It For Good website all you have to do is enter your item and where you are, see what your options are nearby, then you can decide if you want to give to a charity, to an individual and so on. Let us do the research, so you can do the giving. We'll always be free for individuals to use.
If you're an organisation you will benefit too. Give It For Good will help you get more donations of what you need, more often. If you're a little community project that needs spare fabric, now you have somewhere for people to find you. If you're a larger organisation, you can update your details yourself without having to hassle the council. And it's easier for councils - less maintaining of websites and less rubbish to collect means lower council tax.
We have a prototype at http://giveitforgood.com, and years of experience in promoting reuse via Freegle (http://ilovefreegle.org). This crowdfunder is to develop the full site and fund a 6 month pilot project listing all the options in Brighton and Hove. In future we intend to follow that up with a regional roll out across the South East and then extending nationally. We will make this self-sustaining, probably by organisations paying a small annual fee for a location to be listed - more than covered if they get a couple of extra donations a year.
Reuse will never be mainstream in the UK unless it's easy. Let's make it happen.
We're aiming for £15,000 to fund the development and pilot.
- If we get less than £5,000 then, sadly, we cannot proceed. We will offer you a refund of your donation (including the 9% indiegogo will have deducated).
- If we get between £5,000 and £10,000 then we cannot proceed with the pilot, but we will be able to build something which will give us a much better chance of winning further funding. We will ask you if you want your donation to go towards this or have it back.
- If we get between £10,000 and £15,000 then we will be able to run a pilot with some significant restrictions.
- If we get more than £15,000 then we will expand the pilot to cover other areas or more features.
