Short Summary
My name is Laura Gómez, writer, producer and director of Hallelujah, a story I originally wrote after hearing a friend tell me a dating horror story with a religious fanatic. Eventually, that evolved to actually exploring the incidence of faith and religion in human relationships. In the case of this film, it's about two people looking for love, who despite being a match made in heaven, happen to find a major obstacle in their oposing religious views.
I've lived in New York for over 12 years and it's no surprise that this amazing city provides me with constant inspiration. As a writer, I am interested in personal human stories and character driven films. As an actor/filmmaker, I am interested in diversed casting with minority actors playing non-stereotypical roles. My main concern is that the characters' struggles are universal situations, not necessarily determined by ethnicity, but simply... by life.
What We Need
Making films is an expensive endeavor...it takes a village, and many talents and areas of expertise that cost money. In order to get the best team possible, I need to be able to afford them. It makes no sense to try to make the best movie possible and get bad results because of poor lighting or bad sound. I have a good story that demands I invest in a team that can deliver. The funds requested are for expenses such as pre-production costs, hiring a cinematographer, a gaffer, a grip, a sound person, actors, an editor, a music composer, and also to pay for location, meals, post-production, festival submissions, and other miscellaneous expenses. And remember... Your donation is TAX-DEDUCTIBLE!!!!
What You Get
The description of the perks you get are posted on the top right. Even $1 will give you a big shoutout on our FB page, for sure... but most importantly, every donation will be heartfelt and truly appreciated.
The Impact of Hallelujah
What makes Hallelujah relevant is the fact that despite the obstacle the main characters find in their opposing religious views, it is above all a story of a search for love. This film, as well as my previous short film To Kill a Roach -winner of the Technisphere Award for Outstanding Achievement at NYU- are both very personal and explore subjects that I'm very interested about, such as relationships, religion and the eternal theme of love.
What's also important about my films, is that I'm interested in color blind casting. I want to work with amazing actors who will bring the characters to life, without there being a need for them to be of any specific ethnicity. To Kill a Roach might as well have an all white cast, or all Asian, or they could all be from Mars for all I care. It would not take away from the main issue that it deals with: heartbreaks, friendship, and the need to stand on your own. In this case, they just happen to be Latinos.
Most of all, Hallelujah is an effort on my part to keep adding my two cents. As a non-white woman, I want to show another side of the spectrum and create characters, therefore films, that do not define us by race or ethnicity, but simply show a truthful side by telling a simple human story.
