"After I had been through my orientation for life in South Korea, I entered the house where I would be living. I found nothing. No TV set, no furniture, not even a spoon. I felt empty."

The moving story of Hyeonseo Lee reflects the experiences of thousands of North Koreans who live in South Korea today. Most of them leave their homes in the North to escape starvation, imprisonment and torture, often followed by years spent hiding in China on their dangerous journey to South Korea. If they make it to the South, however, new problems await.

Living in one of the most technologically advanced societies in the world leaves many North Koreans feeling disoriented and alienated. Discrimination in everyday life is common. To make a living, they have to compete for work with highly educated South Koreans – an often hopeless endeavor considering that their education in North Korea equaled ideological indoctrination. The chances of entering a career level job are almost non-existent.

The consequences are serious: unemployment among North Koreans is three times the national average. A recent study found that almost 80% of North Korean defectors suffer from depression, with more than 50% contemplating suicide.

What do WE do about it?

As a nonprofit, grassroots organization based in Seoul, PSCORE is dedicated to empowering North Koreans and improving their lives through education and advocacy. Most importantly, PSCORE’S free 1-on-1 tutoring program has local and international volunteer tutors helping defector students study English and other subjects crucial for their professional and personal advancement. In the process, our volunteer tutors also become mentors and friends to their students, as they continue their journey to become self-sufficient, integrated members of South Korean society. PSCORE’s Education Program has reached more than 700 North Korean defector students, of which Hyeonseo is one.

What can YOU do about it?

While our work relies on the dedication of our volunteer tutors, costs for managing the program are inevitable. With just a small donation of $5 - the cost of a latte - you can help us keep our program a continued success and improve the lives of North Korean defectors today.

For more information on our organization, the Education Program and North Korean human rights issues, please visit our website at www.pscore.org.

Your contribution can make a great difference in the life of a North Korean defector. With your help, PSCORE can continue to provide opportunities for defectors to fulfill their potential.

Was unternehmen WIR dagegen?
