Carter Moody, a former
music journalist (Billboard, etc.) and publicist (Country Music Assn., etc.)
who has built a career in community services (nonprofits, government) and
part-time bookselling (BookmanBookwoman) in Nashville, USA, has lost work and
income due to an inguinal hernia. His first surgery, Oct. 31 at Meharry-General
Hospital (due to lack of insurance) caused missed work. Another surgery will be needed. He returned to part-time bookstore work just over two weeks later. Despite two months of not lifting over 15 lbs., whether at work or groceries, etc., the hernia was apparently re-opened. After more tests/scans, a second surgery in February or March will
result in more missed work, as much as six weeks at the bookstore. Loss of income due to missing a steady job creates costs that this campaign seeks to recover (rent, utilities, car and home insurance, phone, etc.).
Frequently Asked Questions:
Doesn't the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) take care of these situations?
The Obama Administration's request that the state of Tennessee (like others) expand Medicaid through the Affordable Care Act has been rejected by Gov. Haslam (R-TN) and the Legislature, therefore Carter cannot afford a plan in the federal ACA exchange to cover medical costs. Using the public hospital for the surgery is the best option.
Doesn't Carter have paid sick leave?
Carter hasn't had paid sick leave since 2007. In the United States, self-employment and/or part-time employment does not allow for this benefit.
How to Contribute to This Campaign?
-- Look for the big Contribute Now button on the right hand side of this campaign page. Clicking on this button will bring you to the Contribution Check Out page. Please note that your credit card or PayPal account will be charged immediately, as soon as you complete your contribution check out process, not at the end of the campaign.
As you go through the Contribution page, you will need to decide:
Perk & Amount: How much do you want to give?
- Enter the total amount of your contribution. If the campaign is in a currency other than your own, be aware that you will be charged the equivalent in your own currency. Contributions will need to be rounded to the nearest whole unit of currency. The minimum contribution amount is 1 USD ($), CAD (C$), AUD (A$), EUR (€), or GBP (£) (depending on the campaign's currency). The maximum contribution amount depends on your contribution method and the campaign's funding structure: Contribution Amount Restrictions (if you're paying as a guest in PayPal, you will not be able to contribute more than 500 (USD, CAD, AUD, EUR, or GBP), see more below). If you'd like to contribute via direct credit card, Indiegogo accepts contributions via Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, and since you’re contributing to a campaign raising funds in USD, it will also accept American Express. Indiegogo does not accept pre-paid value cards, or gift cards.
- Select your desired perk, if available. You may choose "No perk, I just want to contribute" if you'd prefer not to claim a perk in exchange for your contribution.
Contact Information to receive perks:
- If you have an Indiegogo account but are not logged in, you can log into your account at the bottom of the page.
- If you don't have an Indiegogo account, enter in the email address you'd like for Indiegogo to send your contribution receipt to. If you'd like to be able to manage your contribution settings, you'll be able to sign up for an Indiegogo account after your contribution is made.
Shipping or Contact Information: Communicating with Carter about receiving your perk.
Do we have to use Paypal?
No, but Paypal can be used even if you do not have a Paypal account, and this therefore cuts out credit card fees charged to the campaign (not to the donors). *If you use Paypal, it will prevent fees through Indiegogo. *Be sure to check the "gift" option and your donation will be tax-deductible, and also prevent fees otherwise charged to the campaign. Credit card donations are welcome as well.
Donations by way of credit/debit card outside the Paypal system also work, but charge the campaign a percentage.

Is there a limit to how much I can contribute as a guest on PayPal?
PayPal implements certain limits on the amount of money that you can send. If you're paying as a guest in PayPal, you will not be able to contribute more than $500. You will also only be able to use PayPal's guest checkout process up to 15 times with a total spending limit of $4,000. Once you reach PayPal's maximum, you will be prompted to upgrade to a full PayPal account. For campaigns in a currency other than USD, the guest checkout limits are the local currency equivalent of $500 USD per-transaction and $4,000 USD total.
