Family Dinner With Felice

The plot

Back in the early 1970s, my dad, Stefano, was a young Jewish photographer with a cool motorbike.One day, he found himself carrying out an assignment in Sabbioneta, a small city in northern Italy. As he was exploring the ancient core of the city and its surroundings, he spotted by chance the old ruins of an abandoned Jewish cemetery.

Touched by the terrible state of the place, he instinctively decided to take one of the tombstones with him to Milan, with the intention of preserving at least one piece of the once so flourishing jewish culture of Sabbioneta from deterioration. My dad did not know that by doing so he had awaked the ghost of Felice Leon Foà, who, following his own tombstone, jumped on my dad’s motorbike and went back to Milan with him.

The tombstone ended up staying for thirty long years in our car box and so did Felice...until my mom, my sister and I met him.

What We Have Done

Thanks to the sponsors that supported us from the beginning, we have filmed the movie, which has been an incredible journey inside the Italian Jewish cultural heritage: we shoot in three different synagogues, we involved in our cast reform, conservative and orthodox Jews, we discovered the roots of one of the most flourishing Jewish communities in Italy. The shooting took place between Milan and Sabbioneta, which we transformed bringing it back to its 1970’s original look. While shooting in Sabbioneta we found out that the ancient synagogue got damaged by several earthquakes and couldn’t be restored, because of the lack of funds. This is why we came up with the idea to use our movie as a way to spot a light on the beautiful city of Sabbioneta, its precious synagogue and its Jewish heritage.

About Sabbioneta & the Synagogue

Sabbioneta is a 16th century jewel planned by Lord Vespasiano Gonzaga, whose family ruled Mantova for about 400 years.

Vespasiano, a cultured and refined man, founded Sabbioneta in 1554 and immediately began to design what will have become a perfect example of a Rinascimental “ideal city”, which included one of the most charming theaters in Italy, Teatro all’Antica. In Sabbioneta there was also an Hebrew printing press (one the most important in Europe at the time) directed by the Foà Jewish family, whose emblem became Columbia University Jewish Studies' logo.

The first Jewish families who arrived in the city were allowed, thanks to Vespasiano Gonzaga, to live and work freely  - in fact there was no ghetto . Lord Vespasiano always supported their printing, publishing and commercial activities. The community was so well integrated that even after Vespasiano’s death, it continued to be prosperous, until the 19th century when most of its members moved out to larger cities. In total the community lived there for about 500 years.

The Sephardi synagogue of Sabbioneta was built in 1824, using fine marbles and precious furniture,  with the intention giving a home to one of the oldest and best integrated Jewish communities of Italy. In 2008, Sabbioneta with all its amazingly well preserved monuments, including the synagogue, was named Unesco World Heritage site.

Unfortunately, back in 2012, the synagogue was severely damaged by several earthquakes which left it in a terrible state. The Jewish community of Mantova is desperately seeking support to finance the restoration of this ancient, beautiful piece of Jewish heritage.

This campaign is your chance to put your name under the restoration process of the synagogue and revive a piece of Jewish heritage and ultimately History.

What we need & What you get!

In addition to the $20.000 we already collected, we need another $10.000 to finish the post production of the movie and getting it ready for the selections for some of the main Jewish Film Festivals in the USA and Europe.

The damages caused by the earthquake to the synagogue are estimated around $114.000.The Jewish Community of Mantova has already filled the applications for a couple of grants from private foundations, but none of them worked out yet. We thus decided we wanted to help by trying to collect  $20.000 to support the synagogue. Of course this sum is not enough to cover the entire restoration process, but it is a start.

For every dollar donated half will go to the synagogue and half to the film, until we reach $20,000. After that all the money will go to the synagogue.

La trama

Negli anni 70, mio padre, Stefano, era un fotografo con una spiccata curiosità ed una moto molto cool. Un giorno, si trovava a svolgere un compito nei dintorni di Mantova, quando, sulla via di ritorno, scorse per caso le rovine di un antico cimitero ebraico abbandonato.

Impressionato dal terribile stato in cui era il camposanto, reagì d’istinto e portò con sè a Milano una delle lapidi che giacevano lì a terra. Mio padre non sapeva che così facendo aveva svegliato il fantasma di Felice Leon Foà, un uomo vissuto nell’Ottocento, che, seguendo la sua stessa lapide, saltò con lui a bordo della moto...

Cosa abbiamo fatto

Grazie agli sponsors che ci hanno sostenuto sin dall’inizio, abbiamo girato il film, che per noi è stato un incredibile viaggio all’interno del patrimonio culturale ebraico italiano. Abbiamo, di fatti, girato in tre diverse sinagoghe, abbiamo portato insieme nel cast ebrei ortodossi e riformisti ed, infine, abbiamo riscoperto le radici di una delle comunità ebraiche un tempo più fiorenti in Italia. Le riprese sono avvenute tra Milano e Sabbioneta, che abbiamo portato indietro nel tempo, facendola sembrare un borgo italiano nel pieno degli anni ‘70. Mentre giravamo a Sabbioneta abbiamo scoperto che l’antica sinagoga era stata gravemente danneggiata dal terremoto in Emilia del 2102 e non poteva essere restaurata per mancanza di fondi. E’ stato così che abbiamo visto nel film la possibilità di dare nuovo slancio alla bellissima città di Sabbioneta, alla sua preziosa sinagoga ed al suo patrimonio culturale ebraico.

Sabbioneta is a 16th century jewel planned by Lord Vespasiano Gonzaga, whose family ruled Mantova for about 400 years.

Sabbioneta è un borgo costruito nel XVI secolo dal Duca Vesapasiano Gonzaga, la cui famiglia ha dominato su Mantova per circa 400 anni.Vespasiano, uomo raffinato e di cultura, fondò Sabbioneta nel 1554 e cominciò immediatamente a progettare quella che sarebbe divenuta un perfetto esempio di città ideale rinascimentale, includendo tra i tanti monumenti uno dei teatri più affascinanti d’Italia, il Teatro all’Antica. A Sabbioenta si trovava anche una stamperia ebraica (una delle più importanti in Europa al tempo), gestita dalla famiglia Foà, il cui stemma è divenuto il logo della Facoltà di Studi Ebraici della Columbia University.

Alla comunità ebraica che si trasferì nella città fu sempre consentito, grazie a Vespasiano Gonzaga, di vivere e dimorare liberamente (non esisteva infatti un ghetto). Inoltre, il Duca Vespasiano fu sempre gran sostenitore delle loro  varie attività commerciali, come quella di stampa e pubblicazione. La comunità era così ben integrata che anche dopo la morte di Vesapsiano continuò a prosperare fino al XIX secolo, quando la maggior parte dei suoi membri si trasferì in città più grandi.

La sinagoga sefardita di Sabbioneta fu costruita nel 1824, usando pregiati marmi e preziosi arredi, con l’intenzione di dare una “casa” ad una delle più integrate comunità ebraiche d’Italia. Nel 2008, Sabbioneta con tutti i suoi magnifici monumenti -sinagoga inclusa- è stata nominata patrimonio mondiale dell’Unesco.

Sfortunatamente, nel 2012, la sinagoga è stata gravemente danneggiata dal terremoto in Emilia, rendendola pericolante. La Comunità Ebraica di Mantova sta disperatamente cercando dei finanziamenti per avviare i lavori di restauro di questo bellissimo ed antinco monumento del patrimonio culturale ebraico.

Questa campagna è la tua opportunità per mettere la tua firma sotto il processo di restaurazione della sinagoga e per far rivivere un pezzo di patrimonio culturale ed artistico ebraico, ma anche un pezzo di storia.

In aggiunta ai $ 20,000 che abbiamo già raccolto dagli sponsors, avremmo bisogno di altri $10,000 per terminare la post-produzione del film e renderlo pronto per le selezioni di alcuno dei più importanti Festival di Cinema Ebraico degli Stati Uniti e d’Europa.

I danni causati alla sinagoga dal terremoto sono stimati intorno ai $ 114,000. La Comunità Ebraica di Mantova ha fatto richiesta per dei finanziamenti presso alcune istituzioni private, ma nessuna è ancora andata a buon fine. Abbiamo perciò deciso di aiutarla, provando a raccogliere $ 20,000 per i restauri della sinagoga. Ovviamente questa somma non è abbastanza per coprire interamente i costi dei lavori, ma è un buon inizio.

Per ogni dollaro donato, metà andrà alla sinagoga e metà al film, fino a che non raggiungeremo $ 20,000. Oltre a questa cifra tutti i soldi andranno alla sinagoga.
