Help Peruvian Boxers Get To Chile For An International Battle Of Arch Rivals

This talented group of young Peruvian boxers has been invited to compete in the 2014 International Summer Boxing Tournament in Iquique, Chile starting February 3 through February 9th. Tournament organizers in Chile have graciously arranged room and board for the entire team once they arrive in Iquique, however, the team of 7 still needs to raise money for bus fare from Lima, Peru to Iquique in Northern Chile.

The international tournament attracts some of the best amateur boxing talent in South America. Participants include Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. Winning this tournament or placing among the top 3 will help the amateurs get the recognition and support they need to go professional in Peru and beyond.

If we can reach our goal of $1100 by January 31st, the entire team of 7 can travel to Iquique and pursue their dream. If we only partially reach our goal, we will send as many members as we can with the available funds. The funds will be sent to and managed by their head trainer and manager Julio Fernandez. All expenses will be documented and available for review upon request.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young athletes who are moving in a positive direction in life and who truly have the heart and soul to make the best of this opportunity.

About Los Gallos Boxing

Like many boxers from around the world, the young boxers of "Los Gallos" boxing team come from disadvantaged or economically challenged backgrounds. Most of their parents do not provide them any financial assistance towards their boxing dream. Living in a country where the minimum wage is about $277 per month, or about $9.20 per day (many earn less than that because they work independently or informally, outside of the tax system), you can understand why every penny counts.

The parents generally have a negative attitude towards boxing and consequently pay little attention their child's talent and potential boxing future. Progressing as an amateur boxer in Peru is very difficult, especially when you have to do it on your own.

Most of the boxers on the team are working jobs (while some also study) just to be able to train at Los Gallos Club. Even though they don't have a boxing ring in their gym yet, they train at a high level and have won several national tournaments and Peruvian Golden Gloves titles. Here are some of their accomplishments.

Training For Chile 2014 - Watch in Full Screen For Better Viewing

(View in Full Screen For Better Viewing - Video was recorded on a cell phone)

Los Gallos boxers choose not to train within the Peruvian Boxing Federation due to what they believe are inferior trainers and a corrupt system. Due to nepotism in the government, unqualified trainers and officials are sometimes placed in positions where they cause inefficiency and a host of other problems. The Federation chooses not to help boxers unless they have already won international titles. Even then, when a boxer chooses to go with the Federation they may only give a small stipend of about $110 per month. That's not even enough to eat for 30 days. Many talented amateur boxers in Peru believe their chances are better elsewhere.

Trainers Julio Fernandez and Luis Lopez created Los Gallos Boxing Club so that talented Peruvian boxers would have the opportunity to compete at the national and international level without having to deal with corruption and poor management in the federation. Julio and Luis know these problems all too well, as they are both former professional fighters.

Julio Fernandez is a friend and former colleague of mine. Years ago, we worked together as contractors for the US and have been friends ever since. I know Julio as an honest and giving person so when he asked me to help him get his team to Chile, I agreed to do everything I can.  For those of you that know me, I can tell you that Julio and his team are the real deal and we can be confident that the money contributed will be well spent.

How You Can Help

Donations of all amounts are accepted and appreciated. Even small donations help a lot. Please contribute what you can, and if you can't afford to that's ok too. You can help us by sharing this page on Facebook or other social media. Just use the share tools located near the top of this page (under the video).

Our goal is to raise $1100, which will cover the cost of all 7 bus tickets from Lima to Iquique, Chile. This also includes their return ticket to Lima. They will also have a small amount above the cost of the tickets for food and miscellaneous or emergency expenses (Julio will keep this money in reserve). That's about it!

Updates during the tournament will be posted on Los Gallos Peru-Chile Facebook Page. Follow along as they progress through the tournament.

Thank you for your support! We are very grateful and happy to make you part of the success of this great group of young althletes.

Vamos a Chile!
