Even though we have met the initial goal between in person contributions and online contributions, we still hope to surpass our goal of $15k. The more secure a financial foundation we can provide these two children, the more they can focus on healing and coming to terms with their new life.
Meghan Irons of The Boston Globe published a story on Feb 22nd about new opening procedures for the Meridian Street Drawbridge to prevent future accidents.

The Story:
On December 31, 2013, two children who live in the Eagle Hill neighborhood of East Boston lost their beloved mother, Aura Beatriz Garcia, in a horrific accident on the bridge connecting East Boston to Chelsea.
According to the East Boston Times the children left behind are 4 and 15. At this time, there is not much more public information but it appears that the mother was the sole provider and of limited means. The mother was walking to doctor appointment at Mass General in Chelsea at the time of the accident. Most of us in Eagle Hill walk, bike or drive across the Meridian Street Bridge on a daily basis and are horrified by the tragic events of December 31st.
The members Eagle Hill Civic Association, some of whom know the family, and many residents of East Boston are trying to raise funds to help with immediate and long term needs. In addition to funds, we need services to be donated. The goal of the fundraiser are as follows:
- establish trust fund for the benefit of the children to cover current and long term funding needs; if these kids want to go to college some day, let's help them achieve that goal
- work with a local bank to open an trust account to receive the funds
- find a third party administrator/fiduciary to manage the trust for the benefit of the children
At a minimum, our goal is to raise funds for immediate expenses. We do not know the family, but would like to work with them to determine just what the needs of the children are and the best use of funds.
