Hello, my name is Sascha Alexander Renninger, director & producer of the award winning short film Shadow of the Unnamable. It played over 20 festivals worldwide and won three awards and three award nominations.

THE STORY
New England in the late 1920ties. Dr. Barlow, head physician of the Greystone Asylum in the town of Arkham, is stunned when his young patient Morgan Derleth turns out to be psychic. Through her, he receives a cry for help from the down-and-out pulp writer Robert Blake.
It seems that Blake is trapped in a strange and terrible dreamworld, after a failed experiment with an exotic drug. Every night, he´s on the run from faceless alien creatures. Can Blake be saved?

Fragment 1890 is a 1920ties period film based on a literary fragment from the famous American author H.P. Lovecraft. It is the second film in a series of three H.P. Lovecraft adaptations by German director Sascha Alexander Renninger.
The production uses elaborate specially built studio sets, as well as real outdoor and indoor locations. Classic in-camera special effects are used on set and will later be enhanced with additional digital animation and compositing. The film is shot in English with an international cast, to make it accessible to Lovecraft fans around the world. The completed film will also be dubbed in German.
Many of the required scenes have already been shot and the current rough cut has a running time of 21 minutes. But for the missing
scenes, we have to rent two expensive historical locations as well as special
camera lenses. We also need funding for the shooting of three elaborate special effect scenes and for the digital post production.

BACKGROUNDFragment 1890 is an amalgamation of many different influences, ranging from the literary works of Algernon Blackwood, William Hope Hodgson and H.P. Lovecraft to the films of the German silent cinema and the surrealist paintings of Max Ernst.
It is a passion project and a challenging filmmaking experience. Every frame of this film requires historical costumes and props and there´s a number of classic miniature model effects, as well as additional digital visual effects.
How can we shoot such an ambitious short for only 10.000 €?
During the last years, we gathered a core group of talented industry professionals who yearn for the chance to work on a project like this. Due to the advancement of digital video cameras, we can now capture beautiful images in spite of the rather small budget.
But most important is our creativity and resourcefulness, the ability to make the most out of our resources. With Shadow of the
Unnamable, we´ve already proven our capability and constancy, now help us reach the next level!

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

Sascha Alexander Renninger | Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Production Designer
He graduated from the renowned university of applied sciences in Würzburg with a diploma in communication design. His main focus was animation and experimental film. His first job in the film industry was assistant to the production designer (screen credit) on the film “Beyond the Limits“ by German splatter guru Olaf Ittenbach. He then worked for several years at a Munich film production and gained a lot of practical experience, working worldwide on a plethora of TV- and cinema commercials, as well as national and international corporate films. Since 2011 he´s working as Research Manager at
Framepool AG, a footage agency in Munich, contributing to projects like:

The Company You Keep - and many commercials, corporate films and TV-series.
From his twelve years of experience, working as research manager, associate producer, production designer, storyboard artist and camera assistant, Sascha knows how to get splendid results even from limited resources.
Fragment 1890 is Sascha’s second film in a series of three H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, following his multi award-winning 2011 short film, Shadow of the Unnamable.

Sven Latzke | Director of Photography
Sven earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree in cinematography from Ohio University School of Film, USA. His approach to cinematography combines broad technical knowledge and true craftmanship with a strong sense for style and visual story telling.
Sven’s work, which includes promos, documentaries, short and feature films, was screened at film festivals worldwide. His feature film debut “Bela Kiss: Prologue” was critically acclaimed for it´s outstanding camera work. It was theatrically released in Germany and is now available for sale and rental in various countries, including the U.S. and Canada.

Gwenn Trémorin | Soundtrack
Gwenn Trémorin is a French electronic musician, the artist behind the musical projects Flint Glass & Tzolk’in. Flint Glass released the now sold out the Lovecraft themed album “Nyarlathotep”. Inspired by H.P Lovecraft´s novels, it´s an extremely visionary record which would be a perfect soundtrack for a horror movie. Deeply disturbing and yet unequivocally enjoyable and morbidly relaxing.

Joachim von Breitenstein | Sound Design, Foley, ADR and Sound Mix
Early 2008 he finished studying audio engineering and continued self-education in all domains of film sound. Joachim has created the intricate foley work and additional sound design for Shadow of the Unnamable. He also re-mixed the original stereo version to 5.1 surround in his Munich studio.

A skilled designer and craftsman, Sven Möller has not only designed & build one of our major props, but also played the role of a 1920ties physician in our movie. His works were featured on German television and in several exhibitions.

DIE HANDLUNGNeuengland in den 1920er Jahren. Eine mysteriöse Botschaft erreicht Dr. Barlow, den Chefarzt der Greystone Anstalt in Arkham. Seine junge Patientin Morgan Derleth erweist sich als geistiges Medium, sie übermittelt ihm den Hilferuf des Schriftstellers Robert Blake.
Dieser ist nach einem mißglückten Drogenexperiment gefangen in einer seltsamen Traumwelt. Jede Nacht ist er dort auf der Flucht vor unheimlichen Kreaturen, die ihn jagen. Wird Robert Blake dem Alptraum entkommen können? Wird Dr. Barlow ihm zu Hilfe kommen?
ÜBER DEN FILMFragment 1890 ist ein in den 1920er Jahren spielender Gruselfilm, der auf einem literarischen Fragment des berühmten amerikanischen Autoren H.P. Lovecraft basiert. Es ist die zweite von drei geplanten H.P. Lovecraft-Verfilmungen des deutschen Regisseurs Sascha Alexander Renninger.
Gedreht wurde bisher sowohl in eigens dafür gebauten Kulissen, als auch in historischen Gebäuden und stimmungsvollen Landschaften. Es wurde viel Wert auf klassische Spezialeffekte gelegt, die anschließend in der Postproduktion noch digital erweitert und perfektioniert werden. Gedreht wurde in englischer Sprache mit einer internationalen Besetzung, damit der Film für möglichst viele Horror- und Lovecraftfans weltweit verständlich ist.
Vom fertigen Film wird später auch eine hochwertige deutsche Synchronfassung erstellt, wie bereits bei Saschas vorherigem Film
Shadow of the Unnamable.
Viele der geplanten Szenen konnten bereits erfolgreich abgedreht werden. Der momentane Rohschnitt hat eine Laufzeit von 21 Minuten. Aber für die fehlenden Szenen müssen noch zwei historische Drehorte gemietet werden, ebenso spezielle Kameraobjektive. Zusätzlich benötigen wir dringend Geld für den Dreh dreier wichtiger Spezialeffektszenen und die digitale Postproduktion.

HINTERGRUND Fragment 1890 ist eine Bündelung vieler verschiedener Einflüsse, von den Geschichten von Algernon Blackwood, William Hope Hodgson und H.P. Lovecraft, zu den Filmen des deutschen Stummfilmkinos und den surrealistischen Gemälden von Max Ernst.
Wie können wir einen so ambitionierten Kurzfilm für nur 10.000 € fertigstellen?
In den letzten Jahren haben wir eine Gruppe talentierter Filmprofis versammelt, die nur auf eine Gelegenheit gewartet haben, an einem solchen Projekt mitarbeiten zu können.
Dank der fortgeschrittenen Entwicklung digitaler Filmkameras ist es uns möglich, sehr hochwertige und schöne Aufnahmen zu drehen, trotz des begrenzten Budgets.
Am wichtigsten ist aber unsere Kreativität und unser Erfindungsreichtum, die Fähigkeit, das beste aus den vorhandenen Mitteln herauszuholen.
