What is Liliom?

A love story that has transfixed audiences for nearly a century, Liliom inspired the legendary musical Carousel. The story of a servant-girl and the rough and gruff carousel barker she weds, Liliom is an extraordinary work about the limits of love and the prices we pay for it.

For the first time in over 40 years, Molnar's play returns to New York City in a brand new production from Beautiful Soup Theater.

Our performance schedule will be announced at a later time, but we are aiming for a late February, 2014 bow.

What We Need & What You Get

We need to raise funds to cover the costs of producing such a legendary play. The turn-of-the-century costumes alone will cost a pretty penny, and we'll need to rent many items from costume warehouses. In addition, the props to create the world of Muskat's Carousel will be a daunting cast. But what we'll produce is a memorable production of a beautiful play that has inspired and touched audiences for nearly 100 years.

The Impact

Nowadays, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel is produced nearly 10x as often as Molnar's Liliom. While the two entities are much more different than you'd imagine, Hammerstein found great success in adapting such a dark and painful piece of theatre for the musical stage. With your help, we can remind audiences of the play that inspired one of Broadway's most important musicals.
