I am a 13-year-old girl who is attending HoneyFernSchool in Marietta, Georgia. At HoneyFern our learning is project-based and individualized to each student. I have chosen to help tackle the growing obesity epidemic by showing everyone how easy it is to grow affordable, nutritious food. As you know obesity is a major concern in young adults. I will be looking how to grow nutritious food in small spaces. Not everyone has the luxury of fertile land to grow food, and I am currently exploring hydroponics since it does not require soil.

Since money is also a factor in poor diet habits, I am trying to use recycled materials to build a greenhouse and everyday household items to build my hydroponics system. I have been successful in gathering my materials and getting my hydroponics up and running. However, I will require a solar panel to convert the sun’s rays into the energy I need to power the system.

When the project is complete and I have worked out all the details, I plan on creating free blueprints for others to follow the project on my blog. I will include my letters asking for donations along with how and where I gathered my materials.  I will go in depth into my plans to build the greenhouse and the hydroponics system. Please help me reach my goals to combat obesity and help others realize that healthy food is affordable and obtainable by all.

Where you come in:

Please consider donations so that I can fund the solar panel portion of my project. Your money will go directly to buying the materials needed to set up the solar panel.  Any extra funds gathered will be used to supplement the seeds and ladybugs I am using for planting and pollination.

How else can you help?

Please repost this on your Facebook, blogs, and Twitter accounts. Please help me spread the word.
