Short Summary

While the Indiegogo campaign has closed, donations can still be made via the Hilgos Foundation website:  www.hilgos.org

Thanks for your support.

We need your help! Over 5 million Americans currently have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to TRIPLE by 2050. It affects everyone it touches, not only those diagnosed, but also the friends and family around them. And, unfortunately there is currently no cure.

As the toll rises, and as researchers continue to search for ways to cure or prevent it, we want to do everything possible to help those who are ALREADY LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER'S–and their caregivers– to improve the quality of their lives. That is why we have developed a plan to distribute the film “I Remember Better When I Paint” on a broad nationwide basis. For the film is not just another story; it is a powerful case study, showing how life can take on new meanings despite the impact of memory impairment.

“I Remember Better When I Paint” was inspired by the true life stories of people who experienced the renewing power of creative engagement.  One such person was the artist Hilgos, who, after being afflicted, became very reclusive, withdrawing from almost all social interactions. As the disease took hold, it became increasingly difficult to connect with Hilgos, even for her own daughter, the film’s co-director.

But, this is a heartwarming story, as her daughter was able to see a pathway to connect with her mother again. On one particular visit, she was having a very difficult time communicating with her mother. In an effort to find anything that would reach her, she asked: “Mother, do you want to paint?” And, to her amazement, Hilgos responded, “Yes, I Remember Better When I Paint.” These words were the catalyst for the film and book of the same name.

The film takes us through her journey as she picks up a brush, begins to paint again—and recovers a sense of identity and fulfillment.

I Remember Better When I Paint, narrated by Olivia de Havilland, is the first international documentary about the positive impact of art and other creative therapies on people and how these approaches can change the way we look at Alzheimer's. Among those who are featured are noted doctors and Yasmin Aga Khan, president of Alzheimer’s Disease International and daughter of Rita Hayworth, who had Alzheimer’s and also painted.

We have shared the film through community screenings at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, medical schools and in foreign venues from Paris to Dublin to Hong Kong. The film has also been broadcast on television in local markets including New York City, Chicago, and Washington, DC. "It changes the way people look at Alzheimer's," says Marc Wortmann, CEO of Alzheimer's Disease International. The film "shows a new pathway for engaging with a loved one you thought was lost..." comments Gail Sheehy, renowned author and journalist. Yes, the feedback has been wonderful. But we feel we have only scratched the surface - and that an enormous potential audience can be reached through a concerted effort to bring the film to a nationwide television audience.

What We Need

Our Goal: $25,000 will help to air the film on nationwide television. We have been assured that sponsorship and the broadcast will take the film into hundreds of thousands of households all across the country. With your help we can now bring the film to a national audience.

Your contribution to the Hilgos Foundation will also help support more art students in its intergenerational scholarship program - each one of whom will have designed a project reaching out to help people with memory impairment.

If you are a United States tax payer, your contribution will be tax-deductible and a tax receipt will be sent.
