Unraveling Inca Mysteries in the Peruvian Andes

The 16th-century European conquest of Peru swept away a five-thousand–year flowering of civilization in the Andes, leaving little trace in human memory.

Ever since I first set foot in Peru, 42 years ago, I have found this fact intolerable.

Many scholars share this view, so the dynamic field of investigation into the Andean past produces exciting discoveries almost every year. And the more we learn, the more astonishing these ancient peoples appear.

The last of their line, the Incas, are the ones we know most about today -- yet they, too, remain an enigma in many ways.

They modified the landscape for ritual purposes on a scale so vast -- indeed, unique in human history -- that we don’t even have a name in English for what they were doing.

Vilcabamba is the place where the greatest intact evidence of this activity has survived. This remote area, whose gateway was Machu Picchu, has been the location of my investigations.

I strongly believe that this region holds the key to a deeper understanding of the Inca world.

What We Will Do with the Money

We have three mountaintop goals in difficult and remote terrain, which call for certain equipment, supplies and outlays in order to get there safely and work effectively.

We need transport to get us to the trailhead, and an airfare for one of our team.

We need professional communication radios, high-end GPS units, a satellite phone, medical and general supplies, and some new camping equipment. If funds allow we would like a spotting scope to help us track activities and detect remote structural features.

We need to hire villagers for their local knowledge and to guide us, and their mules to move our gear around. We also need them to rebuild a remote footbridge swept away by floods, and cut a new trail up a mountainside.

And we need a cook to feed us (not a luxury!).

We will also hire two professional climbing guides to get us up an ice peak where we expect to find a significant Inca structure.

Who We Are

At this point, we are archaeologist Kevin Floerke and myself, writer, photographer and independent scholar Peter Frost. Others will be joining us.

We are a small, tight team, with very specific reconnaissance targets which we expect will lead to significant finds and an expedition with larger, more technical goals in the near future.

Thank You!

Wish us luck! -- Tell your friends! -- and if you can, please contribute to make this possible!
